Go when they're well-staffed! - We went for a short bit on Sunday afternoon from 3:30-5:00 and they were low on staffing. While it was nice for the kids to get the run of the place to themselves without crowds, it also wasn't the full experience. It was definitely worth it to go back the next day (which we planned to do anyway with the 7 day pass). They were better staffed at that time and it was great! So much of the experience here is with the interpreters, so I'd ask ahead about the days you're coming if they're days/times they'll be well-staffed. They said Mondays are better staffed than Sundays because more tour groups come through.

Interactive history - Great historical site for interactive experience. Start with the movie that provides history of the location. The Powhatan village was enlightening and we saw how baskets and rope were made and how animal skins were processed for creating clothing. The Fort was also interactive with a musket demonstration, blacksmithing and cooking on the fire. The staff on the ships were friendly and knowledgeable.

Jamestown Settlement is a NOT TO BE MISSED step back in history! - We could have spent more time here. So much to see and information to read. It is a fabulous story told with care and expertise in a fun and sometimes touchable way. There is something for every age and interest. There is an introductory film to give you and overview, as well as a classroom that layered on details. The outside area gives you a real feel for the times as well as the how's and why's of the way things were done. Many people to answer questions, and demonstrate the ways of the past.

Come see how it started! - Got to see first hand how America was founded from an English perspective. They spare no expense to illustrate such an amazing endeavor. Loved it.

history alive - Visiting gives a comprehensive and candid understanding of the story of the first permanent English settlement in North America. It's organized in 3 parts -- fullsize reproductions of the ships that brought the colonists to Virginia,, a series of replicas of English buildings and Powhatan dwellings, and a museum of the history of Jamestown from precolonial days to the 20th century. The guides st the ships and buildings are very well-informed and happy to talk to visitors young and old, expert or just discovering the history for the first time. They described how the ships were built and sailed, and they demonstr!ed skills of both and English l(tanning,, iron work, and firearms) and Powhatan (sewing, building igloo-like houses of saplings and marsh grass stems). A special feature of the museum is its honest and thorough presentation of the grim story of slavery in Jamestown. The grounds are well laid out and easily walkable, but for those who need it, there are free "golf carts" to help get around. The Cafe has a varied menu at very reasonable prices. It's very kid-friendly.

Fascinating - I enjoyed the re-creation of Jamestown, especially the tall ships. I would have gotten more out of it if I had gone to historic Jamestown first.

Chigger Bites - I really enjoyed going to Jamestown but I got chigger bites when I was sitting on a wooden bench listening to the ranger talk. My ankles started to itch so bad I had to get up and walk away. I have been putting Benedryl cream on my ankles to help so beware of the chiggers when you visit Jamestown.
