Known as Borobudur, or sometimes spelled as Barabudur, this is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist complex situated in Magelang Regency, near the city of Magelang and the town of Muntilan, Central Java, Indonesia. Recognized as the biggest Buddhist sanctuary globally, its structure comprises nine piled platforms, with six formatted as squares and three circles, culminating in a main dome. The site boasts 2,672 carving panels and was originally adorned with 504 Buddha images. The primary dome is encircled by 72 Buddha figures, each within a stupa with holes. It was established during the 9th century under the Sailendra Dynasty and features the Javanese Buddhist architectural style that merges Indonesian ancestral worship traditions with the Buddhist view of achieving nirvana. The temple illustrates the influence of Gupta artwork indicative of Indian impact on the area, although it retains adequate indigenous scenes and elements to confer upon Borobudur a distinctly Indonesian character.
