Wieliczka Salt Mine is situated just 15 km (approximately 10 miles) from Kraków’s city center and is one of Poland’s most frequently visited attractions. It is the oldest and only salt mine in the world that has been continuously operational since the Middle Ages. Recognizing its significance, UNESCO included Wieliczka in its inaugural World List of Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1978, alongside only 11 other sites globally.
Visitors can explore numerous underground caves, chambers, and even lakes. The mine extends approximately 300 km (186 miles) across 9 levels, with the deepest reaching 327 meters (357 yards). This site showcases the evolution of mining techniques perfected over centuries.
