Additional Information

With more than 30 rooms open to the public, guests can delve into the history dating back to the 16th century when Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen of Connacht, presided over the land and seas surrounding the estate. The construction of the initial Westport House in 1650, by Colonel John Browne and his wife Maud Burke, was based on one of her many castles - the remnants of which may still be explored in the dungeons today. Grace O’Malley was the great-great-grandmother of Maud Burke.

Subsequent years saw multiple enhancements directed by renowned architects Richard Cassels, James Wyatt, and Thomas Ivory. The estate evolved from a more modest dwelling featuring a single-depth room and an open courtyard into the grand, square structure - adorned with exquisite balustraded terraces - familiar to us today.

An interactive gaming hit on a rainy day in Westport! - I had used Tripadvisor ahead of our visit to Mayo to find things to do if it were raining. Westport House with the Interactive Gaming zone was high on the list. We have visited similar activities at home in Manchester, but this one was better by far since it involved kicking and throwing a ball to play the games (which you could play as many of as you liked within the hour unlike the games in Manchester). There had been confusion over bookings the day before so the management offered us a reduction as a goodwill gesture - which was gratefully received. The activities wore out our lively 10 year-old and we also had a great time. The table football/Jenga & Air Hockey on offer in the waiting area were also a hit. We definitely plan to return during the next school holidays and imagine booking early would be a necessity as this is sure to be a winner. Looking forward to taking advantage of the rest of the activities that Westport House has to offer during the summer season. Thanks for a great afternoon!

So much information. - Westport House must rate as THE best historical house to visit in Ireland. With over 30 rooms to view including basement kitchens and dungeons, there was plenty to see. There were lots of information boards to read giving historical details. Staff were very friendly and informative. Some rooms were undergoing refurbishment/conservation, yet were still open for viewing. For example, some rooms had walls partially stripped back or removed, giving a look at the construction of the house. NT in Northern Ireland please take note - this is a marvelous example of how an historic house should be managed for public viewing. I would definitely recommend a visit to Westport House. Best wishes for 2025 when it is planned that the house will be closed for over a year, for major renovation/preservation work. I look forward to a return visit to see what has been done.

Splendor of a time gone by - How fortunate that this magnificent Estate has all the funding and passion to be maintained so splendidly! Our guide, Katherine, could not hide her love for Westport House if she tried. We were mesmerized and enchanted by her knowledge and stories. If you are visiting Mayo, don't miss the opportunity to visit Westport House. If it's a rainy day or you have older folks in your party, I recommend parking in the parking area near the Quay rather than the parking area the signage leads you to. It is a shorter walk to the house.

Packed full of local history - Built on the site of one of Grace O’Malley’s castles this house has definitely seen better days. Lots of structural damage that fortunately is about to undergo significant ($MMM) renovations in 2025. Fortunately the new owners and Tourism Ireland understand the historical value of the property and are willing to shell out the cash to fix it up. Guided tour of the ground floor was excellent, explaining the history of the house and the generations who have lived in it. Then you are free to explore the first floor and dungeon on your own. Packed full of interesting items that will easily take a couple of hours to cover in detail. Downside is that access from town is ONLY available from the harbor entrance. We tried to drive in from the north the way our GPS told us and were faced with a barrier with no access code - despite being told we would receive one with our reservation. Fortunately an employee was driving out and he opened the barrier for us. So, drive west out of town along Quay road to the harbor and look for a small road to the right. Should be signposted there.

Over the moon! - We travelled from Canada to see Westport House, as my great great great grandfather was married at the church that is on the grounds there. John, who welcomed us at Westport house, and gave us an exceptionally informative tour of the mansion, personally took the time to help us take photos of the church for my families genealogy book. The Westport house, grounds and history were amazing, I recommend every traveller to Ireland visit Westport. Thank you John, your informative tour was great!

Holiday visit to Westport - Having stayed around the corner from Westport house we decided to go and have a look. Gardens and walks all looked well maintained and gorgeous. Despite the weather we enjoyed our time walking around the estate. We went on the self guided tour of the house and enjoyed it very much. The art and decor are good. Only thing I felt was missing was a bit more information on each of the rooms that are on display. The 1s that do have are informative. Having gone over the Christmas period was interesting to see the decorations as well. The house was being worked on in the interior so do feel once complete and restored will be worth another visit. Also having seen the new construction underway for some outdoor adventure fun will defitnely bring in more guests.
