Loved it! - This is a must-see for any Lord of the Rings fans (or fans of creative, behind-the-scenes work in general)! Every member of staff we met had the same level of enthusiasm, positivity, and friendliness, and contributed to making our experience awesome - and lots of fun! Our tour guide, Becky, struck a great balance between showing us everything there was to see, giving us some insider stories, answering our questions, making sure we had time to interact with all the props we were allowed to interact with, and keeping our tour on track. The work done at Weta workshops is incredibly inspiring, and we had the chance to do a little creative modelling with tin foil at one point (loved the mushrooms!). Becky offered to take some photos of us posing with the cave trolls at the end of our tour, which we really appreciated. You get to take a photo with some props, which is then superimposed onto various backgrounds, of which 2 you can download for free and the others you have to pay for (but we thought the cost was reasonable). Bring your wallet for the gift shop - I would have bought more if I'd had the budget/luggage space! Lots of t-shirts, models, pins, books etc. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Weta from start to finish and are very envious of all those lovely and very talented people who work there!

Great tour - Great guide. Very engaging. Amazing to see the Weta workshop creations. Great also to see how much h is involved in doing makeup on actors to create some of the movie creatures.

Expected more at headquartes - I went to the Auckland exhibition first and it was pretty impressive. Since I'm a LOTR fan it was highly recommended to me to do the Wellington tour, since there were more LOTR props on display. So I did that. And yes, there wer lots and lots of weapons and armour from LOTR and "The Hobbit". But due to copyright reasons fotos and videos were not allowed in the two first rooms with all the props. In Auckland there were different techniques you could try for yourself - drawing, sculpting etc., in Wellington there was just an area to try modelling with tinfoil. Overall the space was very small & cramped. I was disappointed with the tour because I expected more at Weta headquarters. I took literally 100 fotos at Weta Unleashed in Auckland whereas I took only a few during the Wellington tour - most of them in the shop afterwards. So if you do one thing LOTR related in New Zealand, go to Hobbinton. If you have time for another thing, go to Weta Unleashed in Auckland. The Weta tour in Wellington would come in third place for me.
