As someone who thrives on the thrill of new adventures and the laid-back island lifestyle, this seemed like the perfect way to celebrate a milestone. So, I booked the tour for my partner’s birthday, and we set off to Welchman Hall with eager anticipation.

Upon arrival at Harrison’s Cave Eco-Adventure Park, we were greeted with a warm welcome that set the tone for the day. The tour began with a guided rum tasting, featuring the renowned Mount Gay Rum. As a former professional surfer, I’ve had my fair share of rum cocktails, but this was a whole new level of appreciation. The rich history and cultural significance of the rum were fascinating, and the tasting was paired with a moist piece of chocolate cake that complemented the strong flavors perfectly. I was glad I had a light snack beforehand, as the rum was as potent as it was delicious.

The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the hands-on cooking session. Our instructor, Ms. Carl-Ann, was a delightful presence, full of warmth and wisdom. She guided us through the preparation of traditional Bajan dishes, starting with flying fish and green banana. As someone who loves to explore local cuisines, this was a dream come true. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, and I was amazed at how quickly we whipped up a rum sauce to accompany the pre-made bread pudding.

Ms. Carl-Ann’s personal touch made the experience even more special. She shared stories and insights about Bajan spices and cooking techniques, and her life advice was a bonus gift. My partner, celebrating their birthday, was treated to a surprise rendition of “Happy Birthday” by Ms. Carl-Ann and a few staff members, complete with candles on the bread pudding. It was a heartwarming moment that added a personal touch to the day.

A Stroll with Feathered Friends

After the cooking class, we had some free time to explore the bird atrium while waiting for our shuttle. With a cocktail in hand, we wandered through the lush surroundings, feeding ducks, pigeons, and even a peacock. It was a serene and joyful way to end the day, surrounded by nature and the gentle sounds of the island.
