Highlights
  • Mangrove Boardwalk Mida Creek - This is a long tibetan bridge suspended inside the Mangroove trees, we will cross it to reach the lagoon. Just walking on the swinging boards it’s a really thrilling experience but you’ll also have the occasion to seelot of sea and bird life of the local ecosystem and spot different species of Mangroove. And that’s only the beginning of the experience!
  • Mida Creek - The Creek is a sea inlet about 5 km long. With its shallow fjords, ruled by the tides and protected by a tangle of rhizomes that seem to want to prevent any human passage, this marine lagoon, a comfortable bed of aquatic plants (of the genus Posidonia) and corals, is a labyrinth of waterways where the Indian Ocean is wedged forming several islets. Mida Creek is home to many fish species and a feeding site for sea turtles. The warm and shallow waters, as well as the silt areas are habitats for millions of snails, crabs and all sorts of other creatures, as well as a refuge of many migratory birds that come from Europe and the Middle East.

Sixty-five species of birds, storks, herons, pink flamingos, marsh waders, marabou, eagles, kingfishers, the sacred ibis, like an apparition appearing among the bizarre vegetation.
Reaching the water during the low tide you’ll walk onto the sea bed and numerous varieties of echinides (starfish) and crabs will emerge along with crustaceans with unexpected colors and shapes.

Mida Creek has been designated by UNESCO as Bird International Zone and Biosphere Reserve, and it’s the the second largest ornithological reserve in Africa.

Additional Information

Following a stroll through the mangrove utilizing a unique Tibetan bridge, we’ll traverse the tidal mudflats with countless tiny crabs scampering away from our footsteps, leading us to the water’s edge where a conventional dugout canoe awaits. We’ll experience the local waterways as the fishermen do, and provided fortune favors us, will encounter the rich avian life that the area is famous for, with 65 distinct bird species inhabiting the abundant waters of the creek. Venturing deeper into the mangrove forest, we’ll discover the amazing amphibious fish known as frogfish or mudskipper and the oysters that cling to the roots of these magnificent trees.
As the sky transforms into soft pastel hues and sunlight dances on each water ripple, we’ll patiently await the sunset behind the Green Island before returning to the Giriama village. Here, you can revive yourself with a freshly picked coconut or a glass of palm wine.
Optional pickup service is available at an extra charge.

LUNCH WITH LOBSTERS 🦞 - We relied on Polenta Usei (+254758882147) and Ebo who with the boat will take you to the beach surrounded by mangroves where you can eat fresh fish cooked on the grill such as lobsters, swordfish and shrimp. Really everything was delicious!! In Italy it is practically impossible to eat fresh, quality fish at those prices Furthermore there is the possibility of taking a canoe ride among the mangroves by paying the €7 ticket Polenta and Ebo are fantastic, they will make you feel unique emotions, they are kind-hearted, serious and reliable people. You can contact him from Italy and arrange excursions with him. We had a great time

Mida Creek and Canoa ride - very nice experience to see the mangrove trees. we had also booked a canoe trip via Joe whatsapp +254 723 780 263 you will get great explanations and a beautiful view, especially at sunset. At low tide you can just walk straight through, the water is so low, wonderful. It is best to have something on your feet because oysters and other shells can be sharp and cut.

A great excursion to end your day while supporting a local community eco-initiative - Our trip through the mangroves was awesome. Our guide Daniel is incredibly knowledgeable about the trees and Midas Creek having lived there his whole life. Despite the fact we couldn't do the boardwalk due to it being maintained, the experience was really worth while. It's all part of a local community initiative to boost eco-tourism and to conserve the mangroves and their environment. Daniel and his community colleagues have nurseries where they grow mangrove seedlings into saplings and then plant them back in the water to restore the "forest" around the edge of the Creek. You see these young newly planted trees during the canoe ride. The canoe ride around the Creek is so peaceful and a great way to end your day. There was no sunset on our day but this would be spectacular to enjoy from the water. We saw and learnt a lot about the various birds, fish and crabs that make the Creek their home. Daniel was highly entertaining too and a fabulous host and guide. We were so pleased we decided to take this tour instead of the standard tourist Douw trips. This trip was much better value for money in our view and enabled us to support the community in the great environmental work they are doing. They even spend time collecting the washed up plastic and detritus off the shoreline. We would highly recommend this tour if you're into doing something "off the beaten track" and different. The booking cost is very reasonable and the real cost will be whatever you decide to donate to the community project. The eco camp is a bit of a distance from Watamu but nothing a Tuk Tuk can't handle. It's advisable to get your driver to speak to the camp to get clear direction on how to get there. Take some cash with you too for donations and buying a few craft items at the end of the trip. Generally, we highly recommend this excursion and the project needs support.

A fairytale - My friend and I wanted a silent relaxed environment where we could also do activities in the water. The manager, Mariam was such a sweetheart with excellent customer service. Whatever we needed, she always provided, making our stay at Mida creek feel homely. The captain was so friendly especially since we were not good swimmers. He made the adventures in the ocean doable by teaching us how to swim. The staff were always ready to help and we wished we could stay longer. Wi-fi was great and the food delicious and fresh, served straight from the ocean. Will definitely visit again.

Great experience - It was a good tour. 100% cultural content where you can be in intimate contact with nature in the same way as the local people do. The guide was very good, he knows the area and also sang and explained some of the songs they sing in their community.

Up close mangrove experience - A 2 hour walk then boat ride in the mangroves of Mida Creek. Knowledgeable guides. The boardwalk was under repair and the elevated suspended portion was a bit rustic that took some attention to maintain secure footing. Your footwear will get wet and dirty so dress accordingly. Highlight was the short up a serene canal in the mangroves. Idyllic. Note : it was a 4000 KES taxi ride out and back to town that adds to the cost yet fees for the excursion are inexpensive.
