Cape Sounio is located located 70 kilometres south-southeast of Athens, at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula in Greece. Sounion is noted as the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. According to legend, Cape Sounion is the spot where Aegeus, king of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea.

The myth says that King Aegeus, anxiously looking out from Cape Sounion, devastated when he saw a black sail on his son Theseus’s ship, returning from Crete. This led him to believe that his son had been killed in his contest with the dreaded Minotaur, a monster that was half man and half bull.

The tour can start any time that you wish. Either for Sunset tour either morning tour. The duration of the tours is about 5 hours.

Sunset tour at cape Sounio and lake Vouliagmeni - Myself and my partner had an amazing tour where Patty, Dimitra and Effie helped organise a personalised trip where I proposed to my partner (she said yes!). As it was winter we worked together to make a personalised trip where we were picked up from the hotel in a nice Mercedes by our lovely driver Dimitrios (excuse the spelling). He drove us down to the lake, waited for us and then we drove to Sounio. We had an amazing tour given by Maria who was so sweet, kind and informative and who I would describe as a greek treasure in herself. She had so much knowledge to share and kindly took so many great pictures for us to remember the occasion which we will cherish for life. We were able to communicate both over email and WhatsApp to make sure all the finer details were ironed out. They were very accommodating for all my requests and helpful throughout. Just for some added site info. Lake Vouliagmeni was a lovely area to relax. Very calm with a coffee shop attached and nice area for a quiet dip. Sounio was beautiful at sunset, it overlooks a lovely cape and having the temple as a back drop provides a very atmospheric vibe. Archeologically it's a small site so I wouldn't expect a lot to see and do. Just enjoy the breath taking views and bask in the beauty of an amazing spot to view the sunset from.

Beautiful scenery - Scary guide. - Thought the driver (George)would know more about what we were passing. He talked only to the person in the front seat. The rest of us couldn't hear anything. Lake Vouliagmeni was beautiful and we enjoyed a drink by the Lake. It then became scary. Our driver proceeded to go off on a racist rant, voice raised, hands flailing and off the steering wheel. It scared all 3 of us. We "joked" that we hoped we made it back alive while we were watching the sunset, which was beautiful. - only it really wasn't a joke. He was a little calmer on the way back to the hotel but I would not recommend this guide. He really scared us.

Not worth it. - You really only go to the Temple… we never got off to walk the Athenian Riviera, we saw the lake only from the out side parking lot, and our tour guide was very quiet making the king car ride boring and awkward at times.
