Highlights
  • Piazza dei Priori - It is the heart of the city. This square is overlooked by the most important buildings of the Communal Age such as Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo Pretorio. Many traces are still visible that tell of this era.

  • Porta all’Arco - Volterra is a perennial archaeological site. It was a rich and powerful Etruscan city and fortunately still preserves some traces of this era such as Porta all’Arco, a rare example of an Etruscan city gate.

  • Cathedral of Volterra - This square is overlooked by the city’s most important religious buildings such as the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the former Hospital. Volterra boasts the birth of the second pope after St. Peter, St. Linus. Not surprisingly, his evangelization was so early that he founded an equally early diocese that would become influential and rich throughout the Middle Ages and beyond.
Our walk includes only a visit to the square and does not include a tour inside the buildings.

  • Teatro Romano - Volterra remained an important city even after its conquest by the Romans. Many finds testify to this, especially the presence of buildings such as the baths and the Roman theater.
We will talk about the theater from a vantage point that allows its explanation without going inside.

In between the medieval times : the duomo and civil palaces. Finally there were the visit to know how the alabaster stones are converted in beautiful statues.

Private Tour in Volterra was amazing! - We found this private tour on Trip Advisor and it was worth every penny! Luisa was our guide and you could tell that she loves the city of Volterra. She has a PhD in archaeology and an amazing way of imparting her knowledge in a friendly and engaging way. Even my teenage daughter thought the tour was awesome! (her words, not mine...) And after a full tour of the city, Luisa called the owner of a local alabaster shop so we could stop by and see how the beautiful sculptures were made. The tour was personalized to our interests (architecture for my husband), and was just a delightful way to spend a beautiful afternoon overlooking the gorgeous Tuscan landscape. Highly, highly recommend! Thank you, Luisa!
