A lifetime resident, Captain George will talk about personal experiences and knowledge related to much of what you see. He is a commercial blue crab fisherman and stops at one of his crab traps and describes the process. You’ll see the “Great Wall of Louisiana,” a flood wall constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after Hurricane Katrina. Midway through the tour, you’ll stop at our camp on the bayou for a peek inside of bayou living, and a restroom stop. You are sure to see various wildlife, although nothing is guaranteed, as this nature and not a controlled environment.

Additional Information

As one of the most petite boat trips around, passengers feel a personal touch even on a packed cruise. It’s not just an amusing excursion for individuals of all ages, it’s an unparalleled encounter.

Visitors have a unique opportunity to get a glimpse of life on these marshlands that only the inhabitants know of. Guided through multiple channels, visitors acquire knowledge about everything they observe, the environment, local custom, endemic wildlife (particularly alligators), and might bump into hobby or professional anglers in activity. It is the only Parish that was completely affected by Hurricane Katrina, visitors will witness and familiarize themselves with the details of the deluge and the barrier built post-Katrina to isolate and protect our settlement from the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, which led to area flooding.

A halt at our bayou refuge (which is only reachable via water) serves as a restroom break. Adult visitors can choose to come early for their adventure or linger afterwards, to step into the local bar located on the site and maybe socialize with the locals.

Must do! - Our family of 4 had a wonderful time on the bayou with knowledgeable Captain George! Not only did we get to see alligators of various sizes, we also got a great tour of the bayou, local history, a lesson on blue crabs, a tour of a camp house, and lots of great stories! Captain George’s love of the land was obvious through the way he treated all the wild life we encountered, and his efforts to keep the bayou clean and healthy. Samantha was friendly and hospitable at De Pope’s tavern before our tour began. She was also helpful and accommodating when we had to make a last minute change to our schedule. Our experience was second to none, and if you are reading this review trying to decide between happiness bayou tour or some other larger company, choose happiness! You will not be disappointed.

Genuine Experience - Not a corporate America experience. Genuine Louisiana bayou tour. Our tour guide went above and beyond our expectations and genuinely wanted to share all his stories and things he’s learned. I wasn’t sure at first but I can honestly say sit back and relax and I would recommend to my friends and family.

Great afternoon on the bayou - Great way to spend an afternoon while visiting New Orleans! George's wife Samantha hosted us in the de Pope tavern before we set out on the tour. Captain George was a wonderful guide and was very knowledgeable about the bayou, the wildlife, and the people in the area. During the tour, we stopped to see alligators, to check some of George's crab traps, and even to pull an alligator-gar out of the water. We also stopped at George's camp house that has a dock on the bayou, where he graciously welcomed us in to use the restroom and take a small break.

Great for Locals Too! - As lifelong residents of St. Bernard Parish we can sometimes take for granted all the beauty we have right in our own backyard. Captain George took our group of friends on an informative and entertaining two-hour tour of the best part of St. Bernard Parish. Captain George’s passion for life on the bayou is contagious and his stories stirred up our own fond memories when we were young spending time at different camps along the Bayou. Anyone visiting Louisiana should put this tour and a visit to the DePope Tavern as one of their top stops on their itinerary to experience an authentic look at this unique way of life. And if your “stomach is touching your back” after the tour, make sure you enjoy some of the great food offerings at DePope Tavern. You will definitely be happy after the Happiness Tour!

Everyone needs to go on this tour! - My husband and 2 teens spent the afternoon with Captain George. What a treat to spent time with real local that is so knowledgeable anf a great storyteller. He would back up the boat to see wild life and show us different areas of the bayou. It is such an authentic experience, George would be saying hello to locals on shore as we passed by and showed us his very large snapping turtle. I will be tell everyone that is visiting New Orleans that doing this tour should be on the top of your list.

Experience Bayou Life - Great experience! Got to learn, sight see, and hear a lot of stories from the local lifestyle. I loved the meeting spot of the bar too. I recommend scheduling your tour so that you have time for drinks and food before/after at the bar. Because the bar is a great too! Cheap and has lots of options. It’s the same owners so you’re just getting the best of it all.

Great experience, knowledgable local guide. Super friendly atmosphere - The tour of the Bayou was absolutely amazing, George, our guide, was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and so accommodating. After the tour, my friends and I stayed at the Bar for some drinks where Samantha made us feel like we had been locals to the bar for years. I would recommend this tour to anyone, and I hope to come back again!

Local insight tour of the bayou - We had the best time on this tour. Yes it was chilly and we didn't see, nor did we expect to see any alligators. What we did see were plenty of beautiful birds and an up close personal tour of the bayou. Captain George was informative and entertaining. We were a group of 12, ranging from 3 to 70. I would highly recommend.

The best! - We purposely stopped by the area on our travels from the UK just for this tour and it did not disappoint! Both George and Samantha were accommodating and welcoming, as was Heather and all the patrons of De Pope Tavern. We felt right at home from the moment we got there, and stayed for some drinks after! George’s tales of living in the parish were fascinating! The meeting point is super easy to find also. Thank you for having us! Vicky & Kristian
