Additional Information

Mauthausen was a concentration camp situated in Austria during World War II. It ranked among the largest and most brutal camps within the Nazi concentration camp system. Established in 1938, it primarily detained political prisoners, resistance fighters, and other “undesirables” such as Jews, homosexuals, and disabled individuals. The camp was notorious for its severe conditions, forced labor, and high mortality rate. Inmates at Mauthausen endured extreme brutality, torture, and inhumane treatment from the guards. Many perished due to malnutrition, disease, exhaustion, or were executed in gas chambers or by other means. The Allies liberated Mauthausen in May 1945, but the atrocities committed there have left a lasting impact on the survivors and their families. Today, Mauthausen stands as a memorial and museum, educating visitors about the horrors of the Holocaust and the importance of remembering the victims and survivors of Nazi persecution.
