Setting Sail at Sunset

As a former city planner turned travel writer, I’ve always been drawn to the vibrant pulse of urban landscapes. So, when I found myself in Victoria, I knew I had to experience the Victoria Clipper ferry back to Seattle. The idea of a sunset cruise across the Puget Sound was too enticing to pass up.

The evening began with a 6 PM check-in at Victoria’s Inner Harbour. The process was reminiscent of airline travel, but with a much more relaxed vibe. The customs process was surprisingly smooth, and I found myself wishing for a bit of air conditioning in the waiting area. Thankfully, I had a hand fan from a previous adventure in Chinatown, which proved to be a lifesaver. As I boarded the Clipper, I was greeted by wide, comfortable seats and a window view that promised a scenic journey.

A Sunset Symphony

As the Clipper set sail at 7 PM, the sun began its descent, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. The journey was nothing short of magical. The spray from the waves occasionally misted the windows, creating a challenge for photography enthusiasts like myself. Despite the wet windows and reflections from the interior lights, the view was breathtaking. I found myself wishing the lights would dim, especially as we approached Seattle, with the city skyline and the Great Wheel illuminated against the night sky.

Midway through the journey, a pod of orcas made a brief appearance, their fins slicing through the water as they swam in the opposite direction. The Clipper slowed down, allowing us a moment to appreciate these magnificent creatures. It was a serendipitous encounter, one that added an unexpected thrill to the voyage.

Arrival in the Emerald City

Docking at Seattle’s Pier 69, the transition from sea to city was seamless. There was no additional customs process, and disembarking was a breeze. However, the taxi stand presented a minor hiccup. The taxis were only accepting passengers headed to the airport or downtown hotels, leaving locals like myself to find alternative transportation. Undeterred, I made my way to a nearby hotel and ordered a Lyft, reflecting on the journey as I waited.

The Victoria Clipper is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s an experience that captures the essence of the Pacific Northwest. From the stunning sunset views to the unexpected wildlife encounters, it’s a journey that leaves a lasting impression.
