Dashashwamedh Ghat - Dashashwamedh Ghat is one of the oldest, most magnificent, and significant ghats, situated on the banks of the River Ganges near the ancient Vishwanath Temple in Kashi. The name Dashashwamedh translates to the “Ghat of the ten sacrificed horses” (dash means 10, ashwa means horse, medh means sacrifice). According to mythology, Lord Brahma created Dashashwamedh Ghat to welcome Lord Shiva, and it is also believed that Brahma sacrificed ten horses in a yajna here. This ghat is renowned for the Agni Pooja, a daily evening ritual conducted by a group of priests dedicated to Lord Shiva, the River Ganges, Surya, Agni, and the universe.

Raja Ghat - Constructed under the guidance of Peshwa Amritrao of Pune in 1807, Raja Ghat was referred to as Amritrao Ghat by James Prinsep in 1831 and Grimes in 1909. Spanning a vast area, the southern part of the ghat houses Annapurna Math, while the northern section features a fortress.

Harishchandra Ghat - Harishchandra Ghat is one of the two cremation ghats, also known as Adi Manikarnika, meaning the original cremation ground. It is smaller than Manikarnika, a more prominent cremation ghat. However, Hindus from far and wide come here to cremate their deceased, believing it grants moksha (salvation). This is one of the oldest ghats in the sacred city of Varanasi, named after the mythological King Harish Chandra. Legend has it that the king once worked at this ghat to uphold truth and charity, and the gods, impressed by his dedication, restored his lost kingdom and deceased son. The ghat was modernized in the 1980s with the establishment of an electric crematorium.

Manikarnika Ghat - Manikarnika is one of the five major and oldest pilgrimage sites and ghats of Kashi. It was named Manikarnika due to the Manikarnika Kund located on the ghat and the story linked to it. Initially, this ghat was a significant Vishnu pilgrimage site, and the Manikarnika Kund was known as Chakrapushkarni. According to legend, while Shiva and Parvati were observing the pond, Parvati’s ear gem fell into Chakrapushkarni, leading to the name Manikarnika. Today, this ghat in Kashi is renowned for both pilgrimage and as a cremation ground. It holds special significance for religious and cultural activities and bathers, especially during festivals such as the Sun-lunar eclipse, Prabodhini and Nirjala Ekadashi, Makar and Aries Sankranti, Ganga Dussehra, Teej, Kajri, Chhath, Bhaiya Dooj, and more.
