La Paz Waterfall Gardens is Costa Rica’s top private ecological highlight, featuring San Jose’s finest trails. It encompasses the country’s most renowned cascades, including the famous La Paz Waterfall, and serves as a wildlife sanctuary and private reserve hosting over 100 animal species. They also offer programs on environmental education. There are five waterfalls nested within the cloud and rainforest. An aviary with 40 bird species offers toucan feeding, along with displays of titi monkeys and insects. It includes a butterfly garden with a lab, 2-toed sloths, capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys, and a hummingbird garden with more than 26 documented species that allow morning and afternoon hand-feeding. There are also exhibition areas for jaguars, pumas, ocelots, tigrillos, cauceles, and oxen carts at the ‘house of peace’ with domesticated animals. Other displays include frog exhibits, orchid showcases, and presentations of heliconias and bromeliads.

Perfect Day - Perfect day trip from San Jose. We drove through a historical town on way to La Paz and then stopped at a local coffee farm. We continued on to the wildlife center and then hiked through the waterfall trails. Both were excellent.

A must do - Excellent tour with Edger and it was just the two of us so very personalized. Lunch buffet was awesome and the falls were beautiful, take an umbrella or rain gear for we didn’t and he stopped for us to buy some at a reasonable price.

A Must See in Costa Rica - We visited the gardens as part of a Viator day tour from San Jose. The gardens are set in extraordinarily beautiful surroundings. Walking the gardens and seeing the animals and waterfalls are a truly wonderful experience. Everything here is so serene and peaceful, like you are one with nature. This was our first trip to Costa Rica, and we visited many different parts of the country. We expected to see many animals in the various locations, but it’s not as easy as you are led to believe. We had guides as part of our tours, having binoculars and zoom lenses, pointing out wildlife we wouldn’t have spotted ourselves. This is especially true of the sloths. While we saw several, they are so far up in the trees that they are almost unrecognizable. I bring this up as a positive reason to visit La Paz. Here you can see the animals up close, including sloths, toucans, monkeys, jaguars, ocelots and hummingbirds. Al of the animals are rescues. This sanctuary is very well maintained and the animals look very well cared for. The waterfalls are beautiful as well. Seeing 5 consecutive waterfalls in the same area along a quiet nature walk is amazing. There is a place where you can see two in one spot. A buffet lunch was included in our tour and there were plenty of good choices to pick from, offering Costa Rican and American foods. One thing I’d like to clarify are the steps on the waterfall trail. Other reviewers are correct, there are a lot of steps, 500+. Yes, most are going down, and the paved trail has handrails with dappled shade throughout, making it a pleasant walk. But, there are a good number of stairs going back up at the end of the trail just to get to the gift shop and shuttle bus, I’d estimate about 100+. So you need to take that in consideration. For younger people it will be a breeze. But for older visitors, it may be challenging depending on your activity level. It’s also at the end, which is a little tiring walking up all those steps. So, you don’t have to walk all the way back to the entrance, you can take the shuttle, but you will have to walk up several steps from the La Paz Waterfall to get to the shuttle location. We’re glad we brought our walking sticks! In addition, getting to the big cats enclosures requires a steep walk to get to that area. And, there are many other areas that incorporate steps throughout the park, meaning this park is not handicap accessible. So, if you are up for the hike, definitely visit this incredibly beautiful spot and enjoy the animals and the scenic waterfalls. Pura Vida!

Beautiful La Paz - Beautiful waterfalls and nature reserve. It was really beautiful to be up in the mountains in the clouds. I do feel it was a little overpriced, but then I've found that to be the case everywhere in San Jose. Our tour guide was was friendly and entertaining, and he knew a great deal of information. Overall, a really great tour.

Beautiful - Very picturesque but a quite difficult trek. Many stairs to climb but worth the effort. I particularly liked the jungle cats.
