Savoring Vancouver: A Culinary Journey Through Gastown’s Rich History
Drawn by the allure of Vancouver’s vibrant urban landscape, I embarked on the Gastown Food Tour, eager to explore its culinary delights and rich history. Join me as I recount an afternoon filled with flavors, stories, and the charm of Gastown.
A Taste of History: The Gastown Food Tour Begins
As a former city planner turned travel writer, I have a penchant for urban landscapes and the stories they tell. So, when I found myself in Vancouver, the Gastown Food Tour was an irresistible call. The morning of July 19, 2025, was a typical Vancouver day, with a hint of mist in the air, perfect for a culinary adventure. By 2 PM, I was ready to dive into the flavors and tales of Gastown.
Our guide, Gabriel, was a whirlwind of energy and knowledge. We kicked off the tour at the iconic Starbucks, the first location in Canada and the first international branch. It was a fitting start, blending the familiar with the historical. From there, we strolled over to Steamworks Bar on Water Street, a place steeped in history as a former bustling ship port. Gabriel’s enthusiasm was infectious as he regaled us with stories of the past while we sipped on local brews.
The highlight here was the introduction to IPAs, a nod to the British brewers who added extra hops to ensure their beer survived the long journey to India. It was a fascinating blend of history and flavor, setting the tone for the rest of the tour.
Culinary Delights and Historical Sights
Our next stop was Guu, where we indulged in authentic Japanese-style fried chicken. The tender meat, paired with garlic mayo and soy sauce, was a revelation. I could have easily devoured a few more plates! As we continued our journey, we paused at the famous Gastown Steam Clock, a charming piece that beautifully represents the spirit of the province.
Gabriel’s storytelling was captivating, especially when he shared the tale of the Stanley Cup, originally bequeathed by Lord Stanley, the first governor of British Columbia. It was these little nuggets of history that made the tour so enriching.
We then made our way to 6 Acres Brewery, where the poutine was a standout. The crispy fried chips, topped with flavorful gravy and cheese curds, melted in my mouth, reminiscent of late-night Jersey Disco Fries. It was a delightful nod to my past, blending nostalgia with new experiences.
A Sweet Finish in Gastown
As we wandered through Gastown, the stunning architecture caught my eye, including the first Flat Iron building in BC and the Continental Hotel from John Wick. Gabriel’s vivid storytelling made each location come alive, adding layers to the urban landscape.
The culinary journey continued at Brioche, where the rainbow tortellini filled with beef and pork sausage was exceptional. The accompanying sauce, with bread and olive oil, had me savoring every last bite. It’s a place I’ll be returning to, no doubt.
For dessert, we indulged in Soft Peaks ice cream, a simple yet rich and creamy treat. I opted for the jasmine infused with mango syrup, a delightful combination that was both refreshing and satisfying. Our final stop was Waffle Land, where a whimsical Norwegian waffle topped with Nutella, strawberries, and cream awaited us. It was a delightful end to a day filled with creativity and flavors.
Gabriel’s Gastown Food Tour was a perfect blend of history, culture, and fantastic food. If you find yourself in Vancouver, don’t miss this gem of a tour. It’s an afternoon filled with delicious eats and enlightening stories, a true feast for the senses.
