Wander among 200, colorful free flying birds! You will find red, blue and dwarf Macaws, African parrots, exotic Finches and Chinese pheasants at Bloedel. Don’t be surprised if they answer when you say hello. Chatty parrots and 230 free-flying birds appear effortlessly at home in the exotic environment of Bloedel Conservatory. Handy bird guides and a children’s scavenger hunt are available at the front desk.

Explore the tropical ecosystems! Bloedel Conservatory contains three different climate zones, and demonstrates the importance of habitat protection and plant conservation. Biodiversity greatly increases closer to the equator, and many of the world’s most endangered ecosystems are found there. The first zone is the tropical rain forest. The tropical rain forest habitat is the most complex and diverse ecosystem on earth. One hectare of some rain forests have been found to contain more tree species than exist in all of Canada. next is the subtropical rain forest habitat with brighter light and less humidity is ideal for growing orchids. Banyan and fig trees are the perfect backdrop for these exotic blooms. Finally in the desert zone, humidity is kept low to simulate life in the desert. Succulents and cacti are the stars in this area of the Conservatory. Bloedel Conservatory offers a taste of each these ecosystems.

A healing garden engages the senses and the Bloedel Conservatory does just that. The most obvious of these is sight, but smell, touch, taste and auditory input can all be present. We gain positive effects on our emotional, mental, physical, spiritual, and social well being from being exposed to nature or horticultural activities.

Birds and plants - Very very small, but lively conservatory. They have ~10 different big birds that all have their wings cut so they cannot fly, they just hang around and climb in their branches. All kinds of flowers, plants and trees, I had never seen bananas growing before, so that was a thing. They seemed to have a mouse problem, but for me it just added value to see those little guys running around, probably not so much fun for the management.

Indoor garden. - The conservatory had lots of interesting features, there are many parrots and cockatoos, they also have ponds with koi carp and a vast array of plants and tree, well worth a visit.

Tropical garden 5/5 Aviary 3/5 - Whilst I really enjoyed this indoor tropical garden, I was a little disappointed by the aviary aspect. It was not quite as per advertising - "free flying tropical birds". The tropical birds were in various locations on the one-way route through the lush gardens, and they did not fly - wings clipped? They were beautiful and colourful and lovely to admire, just not how I had imaged the scene. I only spotted a few other birds. I'm not sure where the "over 100 exotic birds" were hiding. The tropical plants in the garden were beautifully landscaped. It was still a worthwhile experience.

Strenuous, but worth it. - The Bloedel conservatory is unique as in all the birds inside, are rescue birds, and one bird has its own trust fund ans its owner takes it for a spa once a month! It is quite a walk from the King Edward station.(expo line) It's flat, but still DON"T walk into Queen ELizabeth park directly on W 29st traffice light junction. The directions to the Bloedel Conservatory are for drivers. It will be an up hill walk from the road (the conservatory is on top of the hill) but follow the directions to the garderns which are very colourful and don't miss the sculpture Love in the rain with all the locks. The walk down from the is easier. The conservatory does sell a few drinks etc but most faciities are outside the centre. If you take the bus there, take bus #50 False Creek SOuth from Waterfront station bayb 3 in front of the station. It changes to #15 CAMBIE when it gets to Olympic Village, but if the driver lets you stay ( we had no issue as we had day passes) get off at Cambie and 33rd Avenue as this is MUCH closer to the path to the conservatory. There are few, if any maps and lots of facilities in the park such as mini golf, tennis and golf courses. On a hot day, take a hat!

Worth a Look if You have Some Time - We stopped in the conservatory because it was winter and there was nothing blooming in the park. The conservatory is small, you basically do a loop around the building. There are definitely impressive plants and a variety of tropical birds. It's probably a little more expensive than I think it should be but I suppose you're putting it to a decent cause and an educational experience. The plants and flowers inside were very vibrant - the majority of them look fake but they are just healthy and thriving!

Smaller than I thought it would be - I’ve been in other conservatories in smaller cities that were far larger. The plantings were beautiful and the parrots and koi were pretty enough, but we walked slowly through, examining many of the specimens and were done in about 15 minutes. I’d thought there would be more free-flying, smaller birds but it was only the parrots sitting stationery on their posts. Nice view of the city, nice gardens out front, but the conservatory itself was a little underwhelming.
