Journey to the Heart of Ancient Zimbabwe

As a wildlife photographer and travel writer, my adventures often take me to the most remote and breathtaking corners of Africa. This time, my journey led me to the heart of Zimbabwe, where the ancient stone city of Great Zimbabwe awaited. The allure of exploring a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rich with history and cultural significance, was irresistible. The road from Bulawayo to Great Zimbabwe was long, stretching over four hours, but the anticipation of what lay ahead made every mile worthwhile.

The drive itself was a journey through Zimbabwe’s diverse landscapes, with occasional stops to stretch our legs and savor local snacks. The agency’s vehicle was comfortable, making the long drive more bearable. As we approached the site, the freestanding stone walls of Great Zimbabwe began to emerge, a testament to the architectural prowess of the Shona people. Exploring the Ancient Ruins

As we dined, the sounds of traditional Mbira music filled the air, transporting us to a time when music was an integral part of life and communication with higher spirits.

The final leg of our tour took us through a recreation of a traditional village, where we gained insight into the daily lives of the Shona people. The experience was immersive, offering a glimpse into the customs and traditions that have been passed down through generations.

As we made our way back to Bulawayo, I reflected on the day’s journey.
