From Seed to Sip: A Coffee Adventure in Choachí
Drawn by the allure of Colombia’s coffee culture, I embarked on a journey to Choachí for the Coffee Farm Experience. With memories of La Chorrera Falls still fresh, I was eager to explore the intricate world of coffee production and the sustainable practices that define it.
A Journey into the Heart of Colombia’s Coffee Culture
As the sun began to rise over Bogotá, I found myself eagerly anticipating the day’s adventure. The allure of Colombia’s coffee culture had drawn me to the Coffee Farm Experience once again, this time to the enchanting region of Choachí. My previous journey to La Chorrera Falls with True Colombia Experiences had set a high bar, and I was curious to see if this coffee farm tour could match the magic.
Our day began at The Cranky Croc Hostel, where our guide, Natalia, greeted us with a warm smile. Her passion for Colombia’s rich heritage was infectious, and as we boarded the van, I felt a sense of camaraderie with my fellow travelers. The drive through the Andean countryside was a visual feast, with misty hills and lush greenery stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a reminder of the delicate balance of nature that I have dedicated my life to preserving.
Immersed in the Coffee Process
Upon arrival at La Campesina, we were welcomed by Mari, the farm’s owner, whose knowledge and enthusiasm for coffee were palpable. She guided us through the intricate journey of the coffee bean, from planting to picking, fermenting, washing, and drying. Each step was a testament to the meticulous care and attention required to produce the perfect cup of coffee.
As we walked through the plantation, the air was filled with the earthy aroma of coffee plants. The experience was not just educational but deeply moving, as it highlighted the sustainable practices that are vital for the preservation of our planet’s ecosystems. The farm’s commitment to organic methods and the absence of fumigation resonated with my own values as an environmental activist.
The morning’s activities left us with a newfound appreciation for the humble coffee bean, and as we sat down for a traditional Colombian breakfast, the flavors of tamale, fresh fruit, and hard-boiled egg were a delightful complement to the olleta-brewed coffee.
A Celebration of Flavor and Community
After a morning of exploration, we gathered for a hands-on coffee workshop led by one of the farm’s seasoned experts. The session was both educational and entertaining, as we learned to grind roasted beans and brew coffee using a French press. The tasting ritual was a celebration of Colombia’s diverse coffee culture, and the flavors danced on our palates, leaving us craving more.
Lunch was a feast for the senses, with options ranging from vegetarian beans, rice, and potatoes to chicken with the famous Ajiaco Soup. The meal was a reflection of the farm’s hospitality and the rich culinary traditions of the region.
As the day drew to a close, we participated in a fun coffee quiz, and each of us left with a bag of La Campesina coffee as a souvenir. The experience was a beautiful blend of learning, culture, and connection, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude to the La Campesina team and True Colombia Experiences for crafting such a memorable journey.
The return trip to Bogotá offered a moment of reflection, as I gazed out at the passing landscape. The day had been a reminder of the importance of sustainable practices and the power of community in preserving our natural world. It was an experience that I will carry with me, inspiring my continued advocacy for wildlife preservation and environmental conservation.
