Soaring with Falcons: A Thrilling Desert Safari in Dubai
When the call of the wild beckons, there’s no better place to answer than the heart of the Dubai desert. Join me as I embark on a thrilling falconry safari, where ancient traditions meet modern adventure.
The Call of the Desert
As the sun began its ascent over the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, I found myself in the back of a luxury 4x4, heading towards the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. The anticipation was palpable, not just because of the adventure that lay ahead, but because I was about to engage in an ancient art that has been practiced for centuries—falconry. My guide for the day, Werner, was a fountain of knowledge and enthusiasm, setting the tone for what promised to be an unforgettable experience.
The drive to the reserve was a journey in itself. With Dave the Kestrel and Khaimah the greater spotted eagle as our travel companions, the excitement was infectious. Werner’s stories about the birds and the desert were as captivating as the landscape unfolding before us. The desert, with its rolling dunes and the occasional sighting of Arabian Oryx and Gazelles, was a sight to behold. It was a reminder of the raw beauty and untamed spirit of nature—a perfect backdrop for the adventure that awaited.
A Dance with Raptors
Upon arrival at our camp, we were greeted with the warm hospitality of Sarab, our second guide, who offered us Arabic coffee and dates—a traditional welcome that set the stage for the morning’s activities. The air was filled with a sense of reverence as we were introduced to the stars of the show: Dory the Barn owl, Pandora the Peregrine falcon, Gamora the Gyr/peregrine, and Harry the Harris’s hawk.
The falconry session was nothing short of magical. Watching these majestic birds soar through the sky, only to return to our gloved hands, was an experience that defied description. Werner’s expertise shone through as he demonstrated both traditional and modern falconry techniques, sharing fascinating insights into the history and significance of this ancient practice. Each bird had its own personality and story, and Werner’s anecdotes brought them to life in a way that was both educational and entertaining.
A Feast for the Senses
After the exhilarating falconry session, we made our way to the Al Maha Desert Resort for a well-deserved breakfast. The resort, nestled amidst the dunes, offered a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The breakfast spread was a feast for the senses, with a variety of dishes that catered to every palate. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the morning’s adventures.
The final leg of our journey took us to the Falcon and Heritage Museum, where we delved deeper into the rich history and cultural significance of falconry in the region. The museum was a treasure trove of artifacts and exhibits, offering a glimpse into the past and the enduring legacy of this noble art.
As we made our way back to Dubai, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique and authentic adventure. The Falconry Safari had not only deepened my appreciation for the art of falconry but had also rekindled my love for the desert and its timeless allure. For anyone seeking an adventure that combines history, culture, and the thrill of the wild, this is an experience not to be missed.
