Tour Begins in Ulaanbaatar
Genghis Khan Square - Upon arrival at the airport, guests will be transferred to Ulaanbaatar, meaning ‘Red Hero,’ where they will check into a centrally located hotel. Depending on the flight schedule, a city tour may be enjoyed this afternoon, including visits to Sukhbaatar Square and the National Museum of Mongolian History.
Gandantegchenling Monastery - A visit to Gandan Monastery, the largest and most significant active monastery in Mongolia, is planned. It houses an impressive 26-meter-high statue of a Buddhist figure adorned with precious stones and gold leaf.
In the evening, a welcome dinner will be hosted at one of our preferred restaurants.
Ulaanbaatar – Ulgii
Bayan-Olgii Province - Departing Ulaanbaatar in the morning, a 3-4 hour flight will take guests across the vast steppe to Ulgii, the heart of the predominantly Kazakh region in western Mongolia. There will be an opportunity to explore the town and visit the local market, offering a genuine taste of the region and its people.
Guests can stock up on snacks and drinks at the local supermarket for the upcoming trek. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Ulgii – Tuva Family at Tavan Bogd NP
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - A rugged drive through the high desert leads to the stunning Tavan Bogd National Park, a vast mountainous landscape forming a breathtaking natural border between Mongolia, China, and Russia. The park is home to the five ‘saintly’ peaks, including Kuiten Uul, Mongolia’s highest mountain at 4,374 meters.
Along the way, encounters with nomadic Tuva families, indigenous to Central Asia, are planned. Guests will meet a family and learn about their lifestyle. Guides and pack animals for the trek will also be arranged here.
Camp will be set up, and luggage prepared for the next three days.
First Day of Trekking Tavan Bogd NP
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - After breakfast, camels or horses will be loaded, and the trek to the base camp (3100m) of the snow-capped Tavan Bogd massif will begin. The hike ascends steadily over lush alpine tundra and crosses glacial runoffs, which can be muddy. Views of the glacier and distant snow-capped peaks are spectacular.
Camp will be set up for two nights next to the 20km long Potanin glacier, the largest and most imposing of the twenty glaciers in the Mongolian Altai. Guests can enjoy the awe-inspiring landscape.
Second Day of Trekking Tavan Bogd NP – Malchin Peak
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - The climb to Malchin Peak (4050m), rising directly from the camp to the Russian border, is planned for today. An early start is necessary for this full day of trekking over rocky terrain with some loose rocks, but no technical climbing equipment is needed. Weather conditions may change suddenly, but the reward is stunning views of the Alai Tavan Bogd’s glaciated peaks, Potanin glacier, and vistas of Russia and Kazakhstan to the North and Mount Khuiten to the South.
Third Day of Trekking Tavan Bogd NP
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - In the morning, the trek continues up the valley towards the head of Tsagaan Gol valley, where vehicles will be rejoined for the journey back to the Tuva family, where trekking guides and pack animals were initially hired.
There will be time to rest, enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and reflect on the past few days’ adventures.
Drive to a Kazak Family
Olgiy - Today, guests bid farewell to the trekking guides and embark on a long drive towards a Kazak family, near the Golden Eagle Hunters Festival.
The journey is invigorating, crossing wide open spaces of high desert and steppe and over high mountain passes. Accommodation will be in gers set up next to the host family, offering comfort, though facilities are basic, with washing limited to a bowl of water and a long drop toilet.
In the evening, guests can enjoy genuine Kazakh hospitality, learning about the eagle hunters’ nomadic lifestyle and their eagle training methods.
Golden Eagle Hunters Festival
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - This morning, guests have the first opportunity to experience the vibrant color and pageantry of the Golden Eagle Hunters Festival of Altai. The intimate celebrations offer a chance to enjoy the festival’s splendor and spectacle. Today’s events include the opening ceremony with a parade of eagle hunters in full regalia, competitions testing the agility and mastery of bird and hunter, horse racing, camel racing, equestrian games, and the entertaining ‘Bushkashi’ - a goat skin tug-o-war on horseback.
Golden Eagle Hunters Festival (B,L,D)
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Returning to the festival this morning, guests will enjoy more spectacular photo opportunities, taking in another day of exhilarating competition and color on the high desert steppes. In the late afternoon, the festival winners will be announced at the awards ceremony.
Olgii – Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar Department Store - After breakfast, guests will transfer to the airport for a mid-morning flight to Ulaanbaatar.
Upon return to UB, further exploration and last-minute souvenir shopping are planned. Cashmere, leather goods, and traditional handicrafts are excellent options, and the guide will recommend the best places to find these.
In the evening, a concert of traditional Mongolian music and dance, including throat singing, will be followed by dinner.
Chinghis Khan Statue and Gorkhi-Terelj National Park
Chinggis Khaan Statue - Today, a journey 54km east of the city to visit the giant Genghis Khan statue at Tsonjin Bolog is planned. This imposing statue, approximately 40m tall, depicts the Mongolian ruler on horseback, and it is possible to climb onto the horse’s head for a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
Gorkhi Terelj National Park - The tour continues northwards to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park to see Turtle Rock and visit the Aryabala Meditation Temple, built on a hill with commanding views of the countryside, before returning to UB in the afternoon.
A farewell dinner will be enjoyed at another of our favorite restaurants in the city.
