Day 1: Transfer from Moshi Town to Machame Gate (1490m) - Machame Camp (2980m)
In the early morning, the Mount Kilimanjaro climbing guide will provide a briefing after breakfast. Around 9:00 am, the journey to Machame Gate begins. The ascent starts immediately, entering the rain forest. Be prepared for rain, which can make the trail quite wet, muddy, and slippery.
Day 2: Machame Camp (2980m) - Shira Campsite (3840m)
After breakfast, the day is dedicated to reaching Shira Campsite with a picnic lunch. The night at this exposed camp will be colder than the previous one, with temperatures dropping below freezing. The trail leads for about an hour to the forest’s edge, then continues for two hours at a gentler slope through the moorland zone. After a picnic lunch and rest, the journey continues up a rocky ridge onto the Shira Plateau.
Day 3: Shira (3840m) - Lava Tower (4630m) - Barranco Camp (3950m)
The route turns east into a semi-desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower, reaching an altitude of 4630m after about four hours of walking. Lunch is served in a designated area before ascending the rocky scree path to Lava Tower. After lunch, the descent of nearly 680m to the Barranco camping area begins. The acclimatization benefits of reaching the high altitude of 4600m at Lava Tower become evident.
Day 4: Barranco Hut (3950m) to Karanga Valley Camp (4200m)
The morning begins with a scramble up the nearly vertical Barranco Wall to an altitude of about 4,200m. After lunch, climbers are advised to rest at this point.
Day 5: Karanga Valley (4200m) to Barafu Camp (4600m)
From this point, there is no water available, so it is essential to stock up as there is no water at Barafu Hut. Climbers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the camp before dark, as it is located on an exposed and precarious ridge.
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4550m) - Uhuru Peak (5895m) - Mweka (3100m)
After some tea and biscuits, the climb to Uhuru Peak begins at night. The route heads in a northwesterly direction, ascending through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. At Stella Point (5685m), a short rest is taken, offering the chance to witness a magnificent sunrise (weather permitting). From Stella Point, snow is typically encountered all the way on the 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Day 7: Mweka Camp (3100m) - Mweka Gate (1980m)
Following an early and well-deserved breakfast, a short 3-hour scenic hike leads back to the Park gate. At Mweka Gate, climbers sign their names and details in a register. Successful climbers receive their summit certificates here.
