Additional Information

The historical locale of Muyil nests within the northern area of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve. This ancient Mayan commerce hub offers a unique opportunity to witness striking Mayan edifices like the 17 meters (57 ft) El Castillo structure, set amidst the incredibly varied semi-evergreen forest of Sian Ka’an. Follow an educational path from the historical site towards Sian Ka’an’s highest viewing point to appreciate the lush jungle greenery and invigorating freshwater marshes. Upon reaching the Muyil lagoon, you will embark on a boat journey across twin lagoons linked by a manmade canal that’s been in operation for multiple centuries. Xlapak is the edifice situated at the origin point of the slow-moving river where a magical floating journey in pristinely clear rainwater leading to the Caribbean sea begins. Enjoy a 30-minute floating experience enveloped by mangroves, orchids, bromeliads with a delightful vegetarian picnic featuring seasonal fruits as part of the tour.

Family Fun in Sian Kaan - We took this tour yesterday and had a wonderful time. The ruins were interesting, especially if you have not been to any Mayan ruins. The setting was amazing. We walked through the shady jungle and saw so many different plants. We even saw HOWLER MONKEYS. The boat ride and river float was incredibly special. It is a way to really better understand the ecology of the area, enjoy truly relaxing nature with beautiful views, and just SUPER FUN! - Jose was our driver. He was super friendly and attentive. He was pretty funny too! We would love to have him as a driver for any excursion. - Maca was our guide. She was INCREDIBLY knowledgeable about the ruins, plants, and general biodiversity of the region. She answered lots of questions that had come up throughout our trip, not just during the tour. She was super friendly and funny and great with kids! We had a nice lunch and a healthy snack on the tour. We wore sandals and brought towels. It was a very relaxing and beautiful activity.

Totally at peace in nature on this tour!!! - We did a private version of this tour with our guide Marco and driver Jesus. Marco was super knowledgeable of the history, flora and fauna of the sites. He was very accommodating and personal as was Jesus. They made ourbtrip even better. Was nice to see the ruins briefly. Followed with a local lunch and then an awesome boat ride to the lagoon and a casual swim on the lazy river. Totally out of this world. Water was warm and super peaceful.

Floating down the canal,... - Floating down the canal, in a small group of six, allowed us to feel very at one with nature and our guide, Lea, did a good job of explaining the importance of the Biosphere Reserve to the local ecology. It was all around a very fun day.

History, thrills and fun! - Our guide Cesar was very passionate and knowledgeable about the history and ecosystem of Sian Ka’an and the Muyil ruins. He provided a lot of new-to-us information and some dry humor. The highlights for us were the adventurous speedboat ride through the lagoons and the lazy river float in the canals. Throughout he made sure everyone on the tour was comfortable and happy. We had an excellent time!

Holiday highlight - Fantastic trip and a highlight of our holiday, in no small part thanks to Alonso who was a superb guide. He provided us all with so much insight in to Mayan history and culture and happily answered our many questions about Mexico plus accommodated our trilingual group with ease. The trip itself was interesting, informative and varied. We learned a lot visiting Muyil, which was very quiet so we got to enjoy it without having to navigate large crowds. A tasty lunch in a local restaurant followed by a trip to the biosphere, floating down the canal was the perfect end to our half day adventure. Would highly recommend!
