Tulum’s Treasures: A Day of Ruins, Turtles, and Cenotes
Drawn by the allure of ancient ruins and the promise of swimming with sea turtles, I embarked on a journey to Tulum. What unfolded was a day of discovery, adventure, and connection with the natural world.
Discovering Ancient Wonders in Tulum
The day began with a sense of anticipation as we set off to explore the ancient ruins of Tulum. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean, and the idea of visiting a Mayan archaeological site perched on the edge of the Caribbean Sea was irresistible. The ruins were as breathtaking as I’d imagined, with the turquoise waters providing a stunning backdrop to the ancient stone structures. Our guide, Anni, was a gem—her passion for the history and culture of the area was infectious, and her translations made the experience accessible to everyone in our group.
After a brief guided tour, we were given the freedom to wander and explore the site on our own. I took the opportunity to soak in the atmosphere, imagining what life might have been like for the Mayans who once inhabited this place. The combination of history and natural beauty was truly captivating, and I found myself lingering longer than expected, reluctant to leave this magical spot.
Swimming with Turtles in Akumal
Next on the itinerary was a snorkeling adventure in Akumal, a place renowned for its sea turtles. As someone who spends a lot of time in the water, I was particularly excited about this part of the trip. The rules for snorkeling here are strict, and rightly so, to protect the delicate marine ecosystem. We were briefed on the do’s and don’ts before slipping into the water, and I was thrilled to spot several turtles gliding gracefully beneath the surface.
The visibility was incredible, and the underwater world was teeming with life. Brightly colored fish darted around us, and the coral formations were a sight to behold. It was a reminder of why I love the ocean so much—its beauty is unparalleled, and every dive or snorkel offers a new perspective. The experience was made even more special by the fact that our group was respectful of the environment, ensuring that these magnificent creatures can continue to thrive in their natural habitat.
Refreshing Dip in a Cenote
The final stop of the day was a swim in a cenote, a natural sinkhole filled with crystal-clear water. Having spent years surfing and exploring the Caribbean, I’ve encountered my fair share of stunning swimming spots, but this cenote was something else entirely. The water was refreshingly cool, a welcome respite from the heat of the day, and the surrounding stalactites and stalagmites created an otherworldly atmosphere.
We were fortunate to have the cenote to ourselves, allowing us to fully immerse in the experience. I took the opportunity to snorkel through the underground caves, marveling at the play of light and shadow on the rock formations. It was a serene and meditative experience, a perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and discovery.
As we wrapped up the tour with a delicious taco lunch, I reflected on the day’s experiences. The combination of history, marine life, and natural beauty had made for an unforgettable adventure. For anyone looking to explore the wonders of the Riviera Maya, I can’t recommend this excursion enough. It’s a journey that captures the essence of island life, blending relaxation with the thrill of discovery. Riviera Maya Adventure
