Situated in the northern segment of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve, Muyil serves as a glimpse into the ancient Mayan trade civilization. It offers breathtaking views of Mayan temples, including the El Castillo structure that stands 17 meters (57 ft) tall, nestled in the multifaceted semi-evergreen woodland of Sian Ka’an. An interpretive trail from this archaeological site leads to the highest viewpoint in Sian Ka’an where one can appreciate the lush jungle landscape and freshwater marshes. Upon arrival at the Muyil lagoon, a boat journey across two interconnected lagoons awaits, facilitated by a man-made canal that has served this purpose for countless centuries. Xlapak, the structure denoting the commencement of the lazy river journey, sets the stage for an incredible float down the pristine rainwater journey to the Caribbean sea. The 30-minute float surrounded by mangroves, orchids, and bromeliads is capped off with a delicious vegetarian picnic featuring seasonal fruit.
