Highlights
  • Stromboli - Check in at the port of Tropea at 7.15, departure at 7:45 and after about two CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF STROMBOLICCHIO, SCIARA AND GINOSTRA, a typical village with its characteristic white houses and Aeolian architecture. In the immediate vicinity of the landing there are the suggestive black beaches, where it is possible to swim.
Free time allows you to have an aperitif or dine in a restaurant with a sea view, stroll through the narrow streets of the picturesque village, go and visit the church of San Vincenzo or the Operations Center of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology on the Promenade or to observe the traditional fishermen.
  • Lipari - Second stop of the tour is Lipari, the queen of the Aeolian Islands. Stop about 2:30 h

It is the largest island and seat of the municipality that also administers the other islands, with the exception of Salina.

On the hill, a sheer lava rock that separates the two bays of Marina Corta and Marina Lunga, it is possible to visit the Aeolian Regional Museum, one of the most important in Italy, located within the walls of the fortified castle with a spectacular view of the coast.

Also not to be missed are the Greek-Roman Acropolis and the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo of Norman origin. The historic center offers a variety of shops where you can spend your time shopping.

In Lipari it is possible to take an additional tour on board the ship with an additional cost of 10 euros to be paid on board.

  • Isola Vulcano - A few hundred meters south of Lipari is the suggestive island of Vulcano, the last stop on our tour at approximately 1:45 hours

According to Greek mythology, the forges of Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire, were located here.

The reason is obvious: fumaroles and jets of steam can be observed at the top of the active Fossa volcano and under the sea water.

Vulcano creates a particular, almost ancestral relationship between the island and the visitor. The island is the ideal place for trekking lovers, who will be able to reach the top of the crater to enjoy a priceless landscape (weather permitting!).

Return to the port of Tropea at around 7.15 pm.

Great value - Very good value. A 12 hour trip for about €55 each. The highlight was the unique hot springs and thermal vent on the beach at Vulcano. Turn right off the boat. Make the most of the two hour stop. The rest was a bit disappointing for me. Pretty villages but no other volcano experience. Stromboli is active but there is no time to even see it. For that you need a night-time boat trip to the far side.

Beautiful visits, but 6 hours on the boat is a long time! - These 3 Aeolian Islands are different. Stromboli with its active volcano, Lipari, the largest, pleasant and lively. And Vulcano with its sulfur bath quarries is original. Unfortunately they are located quite far from the continent, and we had to do 6 hours of navigation, although quickly. Bravo, however, to the punctuality of the staff. One regret, however, is that there is no French-speaking guide, we were not able to benefit from any explanation.....

Nice day out, but not for me... - The boat, the crew, and the punctuality are all on point. The locations are beautiful, and the information given on board is great (Italian, German, English). No complaints about that. However, next time I would take a one-way trip and do the rest on my own. All of the Eolian islands are connected by ferries and I felt I could stay overnight in a place like Lipari, and visit the islands on my own timing. I did not enjoy the group-excursion trip-type: people running over themselves to make pictures off the boat, the waiting around for the boat, the lines to get in and out. An extra boat tour is offered, which takes you to nice places with good commentary, but the music blasting through the speakers on the way is deafening. So, IMHO, not for me and I would not do it again, but I see the advantages of something like this for other people. BTW, if you take this tour, SIT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOAT. You'll thank me later.

Customers to be fleeced - The "kind" staff, to get to the point of making you choose the paid options, beyond the basic ticket, but with little professionalism. The lady, who defined herself as a "GUIDE" was not up to the task, instead of describing the characteristics of the trip in a professional way, she expressed judgments and recounted her own experiences, unclear in explaining but very good at telling that once having arrived in Lipari, there was no point in getting off, as the apocalyptic scenario would not have allowed for a pleasant visit. Instead, if we had opted to pay an additional €10 and remain on the boat to tour Lipari on board it would have been more pleasant!!! Those who did not purchase an additional ticket were strongly advised by the speaker not to access the top floor, as we would have created a mess they would not like. They didn't save anything, to try to make people spend, they even invented the raffle of the basket with the products they said were CALABRESI!! The places to visit are very beautiful, but with a hydrofoil certainly from another company. I forgot, when purchasing the tickets there was no mention of extra costs.

Tour just for Italian travellers - The islands that we visited are beautiful. Interesting to see these wonders of nature. However, it was supposed to be an excursion with a guide. And our Italian co-travellers were able to enjoy this experience. Ninety percent of the time the guides were speaking in Italian, though it was supposed to be a bilingual tour. Even very scarce explanations in English were difficult to understand due to the poor command of English of the guides. So, beautiful scenery with little knowledge acquired.
