- Pont Naturel - Don’t miss the chance to witness nature’s power. Prepare to be amazed by the natural forces at play.
Pont Naturel, meaning natural bridge, is renowned for the natural bridge formed by waves crashing against rocks, creating a bridge. Supported by cliffs on either side, it offers breathtaking views.
You can cross the bridge, but caution is advised as it’s rugged and made entirely of rocks. You might also get splashed by the waves.
A visit to Pont Naturel is highly recommended. Bring your camera and capture the waves crashing against the rocks for stunning photos. The surrounding green landscape is equally impressive!
- Mahebourg Waterfront - Next, drive to Mahebourg to explore the Mahebourg waterfront and learn about Mauritius’s fascinating culture and history. Situated in a traditional Mauritian village, the new Mahebourg Waterfront is perfect for a leisurely walk and a journey back in time to experience local history. Discover more about the epic battle fought in this region and visit the Bataille de le Passe memorial, honoring those who lost their lives. Enjoy the panoramic view of the battle site.
- Mahebourg Museum - Afterward, enjoy a 3-course Mauritian lunch at a local restaurant, featuring fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken, fish, and vegetables.
Then, visit the National History Museum of Mauritius, which offers a historical journey dating back to the 18th century.
The Naval Museum of Mauritius showcases the French colonial empire’s remnants. Its appeal lies not only in its exhibits but also in its historical building. Explore both the exterior and the various exhibitions. Additionally, see exquisite artifacts from shipwrecks, including bones of extinct Giant Tortoises and the Dodo, testifying to their existence until a few hundred years ago.
- Bazar Street - Next, visit the Mahebourg local market, a vibrant spot for experiencing local culture. Discover amazing products at great prices. Initially focused on silks and textiles, the market now offers a wide variety of seashells. It features typical market products like vegetables and fruits for locals, as well as a range of local handicrafts and souvenirs.
Don’t miss the food! The Mahebourg Market offers a delicious selection of street food, including Briyani, Dholl Puri (lentil pancakes), Chinese Noodles, and the famous Gato Pima (split pea fritters). Enjoy the tasty treats without worrying about your diet!
- Frederick Hendrick Museum - On the way, visit the Frederick Hendrick Museum, a historical site showcasing the first human settlement in Mauritius. Located at Old Grand Port, it bears witness to Dutch and French colonial settlements. The museum, surrounded by a lush tropical garden, includes a visitor center with artifacts from archaeological excavations since 1997 and remnants of ruins. These include building materials, military objects like musket balls and cannonballs, and other intriguing items.
- Pointe Canon - Pointe Canon offers a great overview of the sites surrounding Mahebourg. See the majestic Lion Mountain overlooking sugar cane fields, Mouchoir Rouge islet facing the waterfront, and Ile aux Aigrettes, a small protected island and nature reserve in the lagoon. Pointe Canon is a gathering place for regional events like regattas and the abolition of slavery celebrations in February. Enjoy the panoramic view of the South East and the ocean.
- Blue Bay - Finally, head to Blue Bay beach, one of the island’s most popular and welcoming beaches. With soft white sand and shade from filaos, Blue Bay is perfect for family outings. True to its name, it offers stunning emerald blue waters, a white sand beach, and large casuarina trees. Blue Bay is also home to a marine park, ideal for snorkeling in clear waters with colorful fish and abundant marine life among the corals.
