- Tamarind Falls - Nestled in the southwestern region of Mauritius, the enchanting Tamarind Falls, also known as ‘Sept Cascades,’ stands as one of the island’s natural marvels. The best way to explore this lush paradise is through an invigorating trek.
This half-day hike to Tamarind Falls is among the most sought-after hiking adventures on the island, offering a thrilling journey through diverse terrains, including slopes, rocky paths, and trails covered with roots. Occasionally, hikers may need to use their hands to steady themselves by holding onto branches, adding to the excitement. A bit of fitness is beneficial, but it all contributes to the delightful challenge.
During the trek, participants will enjoy a profound connection with nature as they discover 4 of the 7 waterfalls, one after another. This presents a wonderful opportunity to disconnect, escape the daily routine, and rejuvenate amidst nature.
- Tamarind Falls - At times, the walk will lead through the forest, and at other times, across open areas on basalt rocks near the water. The view from the captivating 40-meter waterfall, the stunning sight of the lush green canyon, and many other mesmerizing features will leave visitors in awe.
Passing behind the magnificent waterfalls is a blissful experience, where sunlight reflects through the cascade. The large, refreshing pond at the waterfall’s base is easily accessible for a pleasant swim. Visitors can also enjoy a natural massage by standing under the cascade.

Mare aux Vacoas - Mare aux Vacoas is the largest freshwater reservoir in Mauritius, situated in the highlands of the Plaines Wilhems district, near Curepipe. Established in 1885 and later expanded, the reservoir is crucial for supplying water to a significant portion of the island. Surrounded by dense forests and cool, misty air, Mare aux Vacoas is located at an elevation of about 600 meters above sea level, providing a tranquil, almost mystical atmosphere. The area is rich in native vegetation and is close to other natural attractions such as Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) and the Black River Gorges National Park. Due to its altitude, the region often experiences cooler temperatures and frequent rainfall, which helps replenish the reservoir. While primarily serving as a vital water source, Mare aux Vacoas is also admired for its serene landscape, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat amidst Mauritius’ lush greenery.

Grand Bassin - Also known as Ganga Talao, Grand Bassin is a lake located 6km southeast of Mare aux Vacoas in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is approximately 1800 feet (550m) above sea level. Grand Bassin, with its Hindu temple, is a sacred lake for Mauritians of the Hindu faith. The lake rests in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is believed that the water inside the lake connects with the waters of the holy Ganges of India. The Hindus of Mauritius have declared Grand Bassin a Holy lake. The Hindu community performs a pilgrimage every year on Maha Shivaratri (Shiva’s Great Night), honoring Lord Shiva on this day. Beside the lake, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Gods, including Hanuman, Lakshmi, and others.

Alexandra Falls - The next stop is Alexandra Falls, situated approximately 700m above sea level, and is one of the most popular nature sites in Mauritius.
Many have likely seen its images on postcards or in videos showcasing the beauty of Mauritius. Alexandra Falls is indeed one of the island’s most iconic and popular sites. Renowned not only for its breathtaking beauty, Alexandra Falls also offers visitors the chance to experience a unique connection with nature.
Once there, visitors should not miss the opportunity to admire and capture the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. To take in the full view, one can climb up a wooden platform.
To the right is Alexandra Falls. From this vantage point, the waterfall appears as a silent white stream cascading over the rocky outcrops. Visitors will also have a breathtaking view of Mauritius’s pristine green valley, home to many endemic bird species and flora. Nothing more is needed to soothe the eyes.
- Macchabée Viewpoint - Next, head to the gorge viewpoint, the best place to enjoy a stunning panoramic view. Midway between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls, this stop offers a spectacular panorama. The vista point is just a 3-5 minute walk from the road and is truly remarkable. It is a must-stop location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne. Amidst the untouched rainforest of Mauritius, there are nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled beauty of flora and fauna in the southwestern region.
Visitors will be amazed at how elevated the viewing area is above the gorge below. There is a lovely waterfall off to the right.
The national park is renowned for its array of endemic flora and fauna, and the viewpoint provides an overview of its true essence.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to many species of wild animals and birds.
