The valley is home to a variety of intriguing rock formations, including small fairy chimneys that create a moonscape with their unusual shapes. Visitors can spot rocks resembling animals such as camels, snakes, seals, and dolphins.
- Avanos - Avanos, located in the heart of Cappadocia, is renowned for its pottery. A visit to a pottery workshop is a must, where visitors can enjoy a pottery demonstration and even try their hand at creating their own piece.
- Pasabag - Pasabag, known for its impressive earth pillars, is situated in the middle of a vineyard, which is why it is called “the Pasha’s vineyard.” In Turkish, “Pasha” means “General,” a common nickname. This area, also referred to as Monks Valley, features unique tuff stone cones that stand apart. Visitors will find a vineyard and several tuff cones right by the road.
- Goreme Panorama - Goreme Panorama offers a breathtaking view of the landscape around Göreme, shaped by solidified lava streams, ash, and tuff stone from the Neocene period. The area is characterized by deep valleys formed by significant erosion, creating a lunar-like landscape with extensive geological formations. The distinctive morphological structures of Cappadocia are the result of thousands of years of erosion, forming unique pyramids and cones.
- Uchisar Castle - Uchisar is a troglodyte village located 4 km east of Göreme, known for its massive rock formation that once served as a fortification. This impressive rock is the highest point in the region, offering a stunning panoramic view of Cappadocia with Mt. Erciyes in the distance. Many rooms in the castle are interconnected by stairs, tunnels, and passages, with millstone doors at the entrances, similar to those in underground settlements, to control access. Due to erosion, not all rooms are accessible, but many on the north side are still used as pigeon houses today. Farmers collect pigeon droppings from these houses as a natural fertilizer for orchards and vineyards.
- Kaymakli Underground City - Kaymakli Underground City, located beneath the hill known as the Citadel of Kaymaklı, opened to visitors in 1964. The residents of Kaymaklı (Enegup in Greek) built their homes around nearly 100 tunnels of the underground city. The locals still use the most accessible areas in the tunnels as cellars, storage spaces, and stables, accessed through their courtyards. The underground city features low, narrow, and sloping passages. Although it consists of 8 floors below ground, only 4 are open to the public, with spaces organized around ventilation shafts.
