Additional Information

Toronto, at first glance, is not what seems. Delve beneath its seemingly plain veneer and uncover sunken riverways, ancient escarpments, the world’s most expansive ravine network, and an oceanside that has undergone countless transformations over the centuries. Hidden Rivers Tours, guided by a professional historian, is the sole tour service in Toronto that specializes in unveiling these unearthed tales.

This tour operates on a pay-as-you-wish basis. The price reflected on TripAdvisor is merely the reservation charge and does not incorporate gratuity for your guide.

This tour extends for a period of three hours. We request you to be present at least 10 minutes ahead of the tour commencement. Punctuality is maintained strictly.

It is worth mentioning that this three-hour walking tour involves considerable ups and downs. Therefore, wear suitable footgear, shield yourself using sunscreen, and stay hydrated. There’s a scheduled stop along the way for snack purchases and restroom breaks.

  • This is a pay-what-you-can tour. You pay on TripAdvisor to book your spot, and tip your guide at the end. Most guests tip between $20-$40.

Phenomenal walk through Toronto - Matthew is a fantastic tour guide. He was very informative and personable and we all really enjoyed the tour of Toronto Beneath the Surface. Unanimously, everyone on the tour wanted his contact information to book future tours.

Fun and educational…it’s a must! - This is an exceptional walking tour and Matthew is outstanding! Despite having grown up in Toronto, I learned so much. I have a new appreciation for our “city within a park”. I’ve been on numerous tours in other cities and this tour stood out with its unique insights and Matthew’s engaging stories. I HIGHLY recommend this tour to everyone—fun anecdotes educational!

Great tour - Matthew was a great tour guide! He bravely faced the rain when our group was determined to go out (even with the inclement weather). He had a good balance of telling us facts about Toronto and answering our many questions about geology and history. I would recommend this tour to anyone who has lived in this city for a short or long time!

Matt is an amazing guide and very passionate about sharing his knowledge with others. Would go on the same tour again, and would like to attend other tours provided by him as well! 100% recommend.

Worth attending, you can tell Matt really loved sharing this - The time spent was well enjoyed. Learning more about the city and its history, how the past gives clues to it’s existence in the present, and how both are intertwined marvellously with the storytelling by Matty during the 3 hour excursion. It was truly a joy, it felt like a newly discovered community.

Exceptional experience! - What an exceptional experience walking with Matthew! I’ve lived in Toronto my whole life and have done many, many walking tours in this city but still learned an absolute ton from him. If you live here, you must take this tour to learn about what built Toronto and the hidden geological gems right under our feet. If you’re visiting, this is a great, off the beaten path tour to learn more about this city and its history and present. Matthew has an excellent presentation that makes you feel like you’re in a classroom, in the best possible way. Loved it!
