Highlights
  • Villa Adriana - The majestic Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli stands as a testament to the Roman Empire’s splendor. It ranks among the most preserved and frequented archaeological destinations in Italy. Constructed by Emperor Hadrian near the base of the Tiburtine Hills from 118 to 138 AD, this expansive estate covers roughly 120 hectares (300 acres) and resembles a classic Roman city in its layout. The compound encompasses a variety of structures, including baths, temples, military quarters, theaters, gardens, fountains, and nymphaeum pavilions. The villa itself was built on two levels: the upper level was designed for serenity, with carefully arranged rooms.

Additional Information

Hadrian’s Villa Adriana, positioned just outside Tivoli, is composed of a series of classical structures. It served as a ‘mini-city’ with palaces, fountains, baths, and more, mirroring a mixture of Greek and Egyptian architectural designs. The construction of Villa Adriana was instigated due to Hadrian’s dissatisfaction with his Palatine Hill palace. The villa served as a sanctuary, far from the noise of the city. One of its prominent features is the Canopus, a grand pool encircled by columns, designed in the likeness of a sanctuary near Alexandria. In the 16th century, numerous artifacts from Hadrian’s Villa were stolen to embellish the neighboring Villa d’Este, a magnificent Renaissance-style mansion with a garden recognized as a UNESCO site. Every room in Villa d’Este is adorned with beautiful frescoes on the ceilings and walls. The villa’s most memorable feature is the spectacular vantage points it offers onto the garden and the surrounding countryside.
