Berat is among the oldest towns in the area, established in ancient times. Following a complex history and several name changes, the city was eventually named “Beligrad” – “The White City” (the current name is derived from this). The origin is clear as Berat’s Old Town is filled with white houses, all facing the river. Berat is also known as “the city of a thousand windows.”
