Akrotiri, one of Greece’s most significant archaeological sites, is an ancient town that originated around 2000 BC and was covered with pumice stones and volcanic ashes due to a major volcanic outburst in 1612-1613BC. Archaeologists often refer to it as the Aegean Pompeii.
The ancient city of Akrotiri served as a hub of an advanced civilization that reached its prime between 1550-1500 BC. From the Neolithic Age to 1500 BC, it was populated until a catastrophic eruption annihilated it. The city’s luxurious houses and overall wealth highlight its affluent and thriving lifestyle. The grand, multilevel homes, constructed from stones and mud, were in line with Cycladic architectural designs.
