Arrival at Paro International Airport and Transfer to Thimphu
Thimphu - Airport Reception: Upon exiting Paro International Airport, Bhutan’s sole international airport, travelers are welcomed by the refreshing, crisp air and possibly a glimpse of the majestic Himalayan peaks. A guide, often dressed in traditional Bhutanese attire, will warmly greet them.
Scenic Drive: Soon after arrival, travelers will embark on a scenic 1-hour drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. This journey spans approximately 54 kilometers and provides a picturesque introduction to Bhutan’s landscapes. The drive follows the Paro Chu (river) and then the Thimphu Chu, offering views of terraced fields, traditional homes, and the daily lives of locals.
Check-In: Upon reaching Thimphu, travelers will check into their pre-arranged hotel. Depending on the arrival time, there may be some leisure time to relax or explore the town.
Thimphu City Sightseeing and Transfer to Punakha
Thimphu - After spending the first night in Thimphu, travelers will embark on a sightseeing tour of the city, followed by a scenic drive to Punakha. Here’s how the day might unfold:
Tashichho Dzong (Thimphu Dzong) - Visit this impressive fortress and monastery that houses the throne room and offices of the King, as well as various government branches. It’s a splendid example of Bhutanese architecture and a serene, beautiful space.
Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten) - This stupa was built in memory of the third Bhutanese king and serves as a focal point for daily religious worship among locals. It’s an excellent place to observe local people practicing their daily worship.
Buddha Dordenma - Visit the giant Buddha statue that overlooks the valley. It’s one of the largest Buddha statues in the world and offers panoramic views of Thimphu city.
Dochula Pass - As travelers leave Thimphu, they will cross the Dochula Pass, which, on a clear day, offers one of the most spectacular views of the Bhutanese Himalayan range. The pass is also known for its 108 chortens, built as a memorial by the Queen Mother to honor Bhutanese soldiers.
Chimi Lhakhang Temple - Continue the journey through Bhutan’s vibrant landscapes towards the fertility temple known as Chimi Lhakhang. This temple is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, the “Divine Madman,” known for his unconventional approach to Buddhism. It’s a short hike through fields and villages to reach the temple.
Sightseeing in Punakha, Drive Back to Paro
Punakha Dzong - Also known as Pungthang Dewachen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness), this dzong is among the most beautiful in Bhutan, located at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. It’s renowned for its intricate woodwork and historical significance.
Punakha Suspension Bridge - Visit one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, offering spectacular views of the river and valley. Walking across it is an exhilarating experience, allowing travelers to enjoy the surrounding natural beauty.
Dochula Pass - On the return journey, travelers will once again pass through Dochula Pass. If the weather is clear, there may be another opportunity to view the Himalayan mountain range.
Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Paro Sightseeing
Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery) - The hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery takes about 4-5 hours for a round trip, depending on the pace. The trail is well-maintained but steep in parts, with an elevation gain of about 900 meters. It’s a challenging yet rewarding hike, offering stunning views along the way.
Rinpung Dzong - Visit the Paro Dzong, also known as the Fortress on a Heap of Jewels. It’s an excellent example of Bhutanese architecture and provides insight into Bhutan’s historical and religious heritage.
