- Srinivasa Ramanujan House - Guests will be picked up from their hotel in Trichy in the morning and transported to Sarangapani Sannidhi Street in Kumbakonam. The journey from Trichy to Kumbakonam takes approximately 2 hours.
Located on this street is the residence of Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the most brilliant mathematical minds of the 19th century. A devout Hindu, Ramanujan attributed his remarkable mathematical abilities to divine inspiration, claiming that his mathematical insights were revealed to him by his family deity. He famously stated, “An equation for me has no meaning unless it expresses a thought of God.” The family home has been transformed into a museum, showcasing letters, certificates, and descriptions of his mathematical achievements in the central room.
- Sarangapani Temple - Following the house tour, visit the nearby Sarangapani Temple. Constructed by the Nayak Kings in the 15th century, this impressive twelve-story temple stands 147 feet tall. It was the tallest temple in South Asia until the Sri Rangam Temple was built in Trichy. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu God Vishnu. Additionally, visit the sacred Mahamaham water pond, where it is believed that a dip in its waters purifies all sins.
- Uppiliappan Temple - Next, travel to the outskirts of Kumbakonam to explore the 7th-century Uppiliappan Temple, also dedicated to God Vishnu. Both temples are designed in the Chola architectural style, featuring a multi-tiered gateway tower.
After the visit, stop at a local restaurant for lunch (at your own expense).
- Airavatesvara Temple - After lunch, take a brief 15-minute drive to the nearby town of Darasuram. Here, visitors will find one of the Great Living Chola Temples, the Airavatesvara Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 12th century A.D. by the Chola King, Rajaraja Chola II, the temple features a chariot-shaped platform with intricately carved pillars and a statue of the Nandi bull, all of which remain in excellent condition. This temple is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva.
At the conclusion of the tour, guests will be driven back to Trichy and dropped off at their hotel.
