Since World War II, Terezin has been linked with the infamous Jewish ghetto and concentration camp set up by the Nazi SS. During the war, approximately 155,000 individuals were detained there under dire conditions, awaiting transport to the death camps further east. Many, including children, perished in Terezin itself.

Originally a fortress named after Habsburg ruler Maria Theresa, Terezin quickly became outdated. It later served as a garrison town and then as a prison during the First World War. Following the Nazi occupation, the Main Fortress was transformed into a “special” Jewish ghetto, while the lesser-known Small Fortress became a brutal prison for the Reich’s secret police, the Gestapo. Unlike Auschwitz, Terezin was not an extermination camp but a transit camp from which Jews were deported to death camps further east. Those imprisoned here endured many horrors.
