Day 1: Tbilisi - Bodbe Monastery - Signagi
Stop At: Signagi, Signagi, Kakheti Region
- 08:00 Breakfast
- Following breakfast, the journey begins towards Kakheti, renowned as the Wine homeland.
- The first stop is Bodbe Monastery. Legend has it that Saint Nino passed away in Bodbe in 335. She traveled across the country, healing and spreading the word of the true God. Initially, a small temple dedicated to St. George was constructed at her burial site, but it did not survive. In 850, a new cathedral was built in place of the old temple. This classic church exemplifies the finest traditions of Georgian architecture. The interior is adorned with 9th-century paintings and fragments of 12th-17th-century frescoes.
- The journey continues to Signagi. This fortified town is one of Georgia’s smallest and is a popular tourist spot due to its central location in Georgia’s wine-growing region. Perched high on a ridge, it overlooks the Alazani Valley. The defensive walls and 28 towers were constructed by King Erekle II in the 18th century to fend off the Lezgian invasion. The town has retained its original charm for the past 200 years. Situated on a steep hill, Signagi offers views of the expansive Alazani Valley, with the Caucasus Mountains visible in the distance.
