- Sanmachi Suji - The narrow streets of Sanmachi Suji provide Takayama with an authentic Edo period ambiance. This charming historical district is perfect for a leisurely walk, soaking in the atmosphere, and trying some local sake.
- Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall - Discover the impressive festival floats that are paraded through the streets during the renowned Takayama festival.
- Higashiyama Walking Course - The Higashiyama Walking Course (東山遊歩道, Higashiyama Yūhodō) offers a delightful walking path through Takayama’s temple town (Teramachi), the city’s rural outskirts, and Shiroyama Park, a wooded hill and former site of Takayama Castle.
Along the 3.5-kilometer-long route, visitors will encounter more than a dozen common temples and shrines, the ruins of Takayama’s former castle, and typical scenes of a rural Japanese town. While the Higashiyama Walking Course may not be a breathtaking sightseeing experience, it provides a pleasant way to spend one or two hours and explore Takayama’s more tranquil side.
- Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine - The Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, dedicated to the area’s guardian deity. According to tradition, the Shrine’s origins date back to the reign of Emperor Nintoku, when Prince Naniwa-neko Takefurukuma no Mikoto, who came to the area to defeat an evil monster, prayed for victory at this site. The Shrine is closely linked with the Autumn Festival, one of the two Takayama Matsuri (Takayama Festivals), the other being the Spring Festival associated with the Hie Shrine. The Takayama Matsuri has been recognized as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Some of the “Yatai” (decorated floats) used in the Takayama Matsuri procession are displayed in the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall.
