Discovering the Mythical Heart of Japan

As I embarked on the two-day journey from Fukuoka to Takachiho, I was filled with anticipation. Takachiho is a place steeped in mythology, where the stories of gods and goddesses are woven into the very fabric of the land. Our first stop was the Amanoiwato Shrine, a sacred site that honors the cave where Amaterasu, the sun goddess, once hid. The shrine, nestled among towering cedar trees, exuded a serene and mystical aura. Walking through the grounds, I felt a deep connection to the ancient stories that have shaped Japanese culture.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Takachiho Gorge. As I took a leisurely boat ride along the gorge, the stunning columnar basalt cliffs and cascading waterfalls left me in awe. The natural beauty of the gorge, combined with the rich mythology of the area, made for an unforgettable experience. It was easy to see why this place is considered one of Japan’s most beautiful natural wonders.

Embracing the Tranquility of Yufuin and Beppu

The second day of the tour took us to the charming town of Yufuin, known for its hot springs and picturesque streets. Strolling along Yunotsubo Kaido Street, I was captivated by the quaint shops and cafes that lined the path. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of local artisans at work added to the town’s enchanting atmosphere. It was a perfect place to slow down and savor the simple pleasures of life.

Our journey continued to Beppu, a town famous for its “hells”—hot springs that are too hot for bathing but fascinating to observe. The steam rising from the ground created an otherworldly landscape, and each “hell” had its own unique character. From the vibrant colors of the Umi Jigoku to the bubbling mud of the Oniishibozu Jigoku, Beppu’s hot springs were a testament to the earth’s raw power and beauty.

Crossing the Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Bridge

The final leg of our journey took us to the Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Bridge, the highest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. Spanning a breathtaking gorge, the bridge offered panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. As I walked across, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder at the natural beauty that lay before me.
