- Senso-ji Temple - Sensoji (浅草寺, Sensōji, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple) is a renowned Buddhist temple situated in Asakusa. It stands as one of Tokyo’s most vibrant and well-loved temples. Visitors first pass through the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), the temple’s outer gate and a symbol of Asakusa and Tokyo. A 200-meter shopping street, Nakamise, stretches from the outer gate to the temple’s second gate, the Hozomon. Along Nakamise, traditional Japanese souvenirs like yukata and folding fans, as well as local snacks from Asakusa, are available. This shopping street boasts a history spanning several centuries. Beyond the Hozomon Gate lies the temple’s main hall and a five-story pagoda. These structures are relatively recent reconstructions, having been rebuilt after wartime destruction.
- Meiji Jingu Shrine - Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, Meiji Jingū) is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Located next to the bustling Harajuku Station on the JR Yamanote Line, Meiji Shrine and the nearby Yoyogi Park form a large forested area within the densely populated city. The expansive shrine grounds feature walking paths perfect for a leisurely stroll.
- Shibuya Crossing - Shibuya (渋谷) is one of Tokyo’s twenty-three city wards, often referring to the lively shopping and entertainment area around Shibuya Station. Shibuya is one of Tokyo’s most vibrant and bustling districts, filled with shopping, dining, and nightclubs that attract numerous visitors daily. It is a hub for youth fashion and culture, with its streets being the birthplace of many of Japan’s fashion and entertainment trends.
- Imperial Palace - The current Imperial Palace (皇居, Kōkyo) is situated on the former site of Edo Castle, a vast park area encircled by moats and massive stone walls in central Tokyo, a short walk from Tokyo Station. It serves as the residence of Japan’s Imperial Family. Edo Castle was once the seat of the Tokugawa Shogun, who ruled Japan from 1603 to 1867. In 1868, the shogunate was overthrown, and the capital and Imperial Residence were relocated from Kyoto to Tokyo. The construction of a new Imperial Palace was completed in 1888.
- Takeshita Street - The 350-meter Takeshita-dori Street, beginning across from JR Harajuku Station, caters to Tokyo’s fashion-forward crowd. Lady Gaga is known to shop here. Despite its reputation for being kawaii cute, several boutiques specialize in edgy grunge and goth fashion.
- Tsukiji Jogai Market - The wholesale market of Tsukiji Market, once known as the “inner market” and famous for its tuna auctions, closed on October 6, 2018, and relocated to Toyosu, reopening as Toyosu Market. However, Tsukiji’s outer market, with its numerous shops and restaurants, remains open. Tsukiji Outer Market (築地場外市場, Tsukiji Jōgai Shijō) is a district next to the former Tsukiji Wholesale Market site. It comprises several blocks of wholesale and retail shops, as well as restaurants along narrow lanes. Here, fresh and processed seafood and produce are available alongside food-related goods like knives.
