- Matcha Trip - A former tea farmer with six years of experience in Kyoto shares the joy and intricacies of Japanese tea. Participants can savor eight varieties of Japanese tea: matcha, sencha, kabuse-cha, gyokuro, deep-steamed sencha, hoji-cha (roasted green tea), brown rice tea, and Japanese black tea. Alongside learning how to use and enjoy Japanese tea, participants will also explore its history and cultivation techniques.
Schedule
- Arrive at the experience location.
- Enjoy a welcome drink. A seasonal welcome drink will be served, during which an explanation of the Japanese teas to be enjoyed will be provided.
- Compare Sencha, Kabusecha, Gyokuro, Deep-steamed Sencha, Brown Rice Tea, and Hojicha. Six types of Japanese tea will be served in a manner that highlights their deliciousness. After observing the color and shape of the tea leaves, the tea will be prepared and served, allowing participants to appreciate the color, fragrance, and taste.
- Delight in Japanese black tea and homemade sweets. A Japanese black tea that pairs well with sweets has been selected.
- Participate in a matcha-making experience. Finally, participants will make Ousucha (matcha) using a bamboo tea whisk. After completing the experience, they will be equipped to make matcha at home.

The main instructor has a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science and has a particularly deep knowledge of soil science. He is a former tea farmer who was involved in everything from tea cultivation to processing in Kyoto. The assistant has a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy and is a practicing pharmacist.
You can enjoy multiple types of Japanese tea in small portions at once. With a wide variety of tea flavors and aromas, you are sure to find your favorite.

Our experience will be held on the 2nd floor of Henn na Hotel Tokyo Asakusa Tawaramachi. Please take the elevator to the second floor. There is a Family Mart on the first floor, and there is an elevator next to the entrance.

Engaging and informative session - It was engaging, informative, and offered a wonderful glimpse into the cultural richness behind this simple yet significant tradition. I left with a deeper appreciation for both the tea and the mindfulness that goes into its preparation. A passionate and knowledgeable instructor who patiently answered all my questions.

A wonderful match experience - Chisei and Rina provided a wonderful and in-depth experience about matcha. Having been a tea farmer Chisei talked about growing and cultivation from a first hand experience, giving us a new perspective and appreciation. Along with Rina, the two make a great team.
A couple of days prior, we received an email which included a short video of how to find where to go within the hotel, which we found incredibly thoughtful and helpful. These are the little touches you will have throughout the experience.
When we arrived Rina and Chisei greeted us warmly. From the first moment, they were so kind and friendly, and language isn't a barrier.
We sampled many types of matcha learning along the way the process and Rina made delicious sweet treats for us to try. We also got to whisk up our own matcha and had different types of matcha latte - also very yum.
At the end, you can purchase some matcha and teas to take home. We did and Rina very kindly provided us instructions on how to make, along with videos - I really appreciate the video touch as it helps understand better.
I think anyone who loves matcha and tea would truly appreciate this experience. It was so wonderful and we both look forward visiting again next time we're in Tokyo.

These two are so great! - My best experience in Japan so far. Be prepared to learn a lot. It’s good to have a working knowledge of tea. I am a novice but still learned quite a bit.

So Fun! Matcha and Tea Tasting - This is one of the best things I did while in Tokyo. Rika and Chisei are wonderful. Their English is very good. And the tasting experience was full of information and great matcha. They also have some wonderful products for sale so you can continue at home. I will be back for their sencha tasting.

A Home Run Every Time! - Chisei is truly one of my favorite people in Tokyo. I took his class by myself in July, 2024, and since then have brought two separate groups of friends to his tea tasting. It is a hit every. single. time. thanks to Chisei's amazing sense of humor, adeptness at modulating his lesson, and generosity of spirit. His wife Rina was also present at one of the tastings and was an absolute joy to be with. They're so cute together :) Can't wait to bring more of my friends with me on future trips!!

Highly recommend! - This was absolutely wonderful!
We had a private tasting and learned many things about the history and production of green tea and matcha. The host, Chisei, is really knowledgeable and could answer all of our questions easily, while Rinas sweets complimented the tasting beautifully. Even the coffee-drinkers in our group enjoyed it a lot, we highly recommend!

Nice experience - Absolutely, wonderful experience. We throughly enjoyed watching and making our own Matcha. It was something we’ve always wanted to do and we’re glad we did. This is will definitely something you will remember and will want to tell your family & friends about.

Felt like what I’d think a tea farm tour would look like! - The experience was very informative and in depth. If you’re looking to expand your knowledge and understand the tea farming process, you’ll understand why there’s different types of teas, and why there’s different grades of matcha.
Chisei and Rina do an amazing job of providing a welcoming, and friendly atmosphere. 10/10 would do it again!
Make sure to come un-caffeinated because you’ll be drinking a lot of matcha (in the best way possible)!
