- Kaminarimon - The Kaminarimon Gate, also known as the “Thunder Gate,” is the outer of two large entrance gates leading to the Sensō-ji Temple. With its enormous red lantern and statues, the gate is a favorite among tourists. The guide will explain the significance of this giant lantern and its surrounding features.
- Nakamise Shopping Street (Kaminarimon) - This shopping street links the Kaminarimon Gate and Sensoji Temple’s main gate. The 250-meter path is lined with numerous souvenir shops and food stalls. The guide will assist in finding souvenirs of interest. Additionally, the guide will treat you to traditional snacks in Asakusa, and may offer snacks at other locations during the tour based on your preferences. Towards the end of this street, historical tablets depict the development of Asakusa around the Sensoji Temple.
- Hozomon - The Hōzōmon (Treasure-House Gate) is the inner of two large entrance gates leading to the Sensō-ji Temple (the outer being the Kaminarimon) in Tokyo. A two-story gate, the Hōzōmon’s second story houses many of the Sensō-ji’s treasures. The first story features two statues, three lanterns, and two large sandals.
-
Senso-ji Temple - Visit the Sensoji Temple, from which Asakusa and Tokyo itself evolved. Between the Hozomon Gate and Sensoji’s main hall, there is much to see and do. On the left, observe the Five-storied Pagoda, the second tallest (53m-high) pagoda in Japan, which holds Buddha’s ashes on its top floor, a gift from the Sri Lankan government. Before entering the temple’s main hall, there are three major activities to experience:
First: -
Draw omikuji, or paper fortune, to predict your future.
Second: -
Many Japanese stop at the large bronze incense burner to bathe their hands and faces in the smoke, a ritual to ward off illnesses before ascending the stairs to offer prayers.
Third: - Use the water purification fountain to cleanse yourself before entering the temple. A famous sculpture is perched on the fountain.
Proceed to the main hall of the temple, the highlight of the tour. Anticipate what you will see, and the guide will share insights there!
- Asakusa Shrine - For those familiar with religions, it is remarkable that a Buddhist temple and Shinto shrine coexist on the same grounds, sharing both origins and worshipers. In this context, Asakusa Shrine is not just another Shinto shrine in Japan. The guide will explain why and reveal how these two religions are deeply embedded in the lives of ordinary Japanese people.
