- Taroko Gorge - Begin your journey into Taroko Gorge by passing through the archway.
- 太é¯é–£ç‰Œæ¨“ - This grand archway, inspired by traditional Chinese palace architecture, is situated at the southern end of Jinwen Bridge where it intersects with the Central Cross-Island Highway. The six-character inscription, crafted by renowned modern calligrapher Mr. Wang Chuang-Wei, has served as the highway’s emblem since its inauguration. Today, it also marks the entrance to Taroko Gorge, serving as both a landmark and a popular photo spot.
- Taroko National Park - Start your visit at the visitor center to gain an overview of Taroko National Park.
- Taroko National Park Visitor Center - At the Taroko National Park Visitor Center, discover the geological forces that have shaped Taroko. Taiwan’s landscape has been elevated by plate-tectonic compression, making earthquakes a common occurrence. The exhibits also display the before-and-after effects of seismic events, particularly the significant Hualien earthquake in 2024, which dramatically altered the park’s trails and landforms.
- Eternal Spring Shrine - Eternal Spring Shrine was built to honor the 226 personnel (military veterans) who lost their lives during the construction of the Central Cross-Island Highway.
- Tianxiang Scenic Area - Tianxiang is located along the eastern section of the Central Cross-Island Highway, approximately 19 km from Taroko Gorge. Here, the Dasha and Tacijili Rivers converge to form the Liwu River, whose long history of sedimentation and erosion has created striking multi-terraced riverbanks. This expansive valley once thrived with restaurants, shops, and hotels, but after the 2024 earthquake, visitor numbers dwindled, and many businesses relocated—leaving behind a serene, almost untouched atmosphere. Look out for Formosan macaques roaming the area; their presence adds a delightful wild touch to this tranquil mountain retreat.
- Cimu Bridge - Along the Central Cross-Island Highway, after passing Jiuqudong (Tunnel of Nine Turns), you’ll arrive at Cimu Bridge (Motherly Devotion Bridge). This H-shaped suspension bridge features marble stone lions at each end and marble lotus stones on both sides. Beneath the bridge, a rock resembling a frog is formed from a black schist layer on top and white marble at the bottom. A pavilion built on this frog-shaped rock serves as a crown, constructed by the late President Chiang Jing-guo in memory of his mother during the highway’s construction. The Cimu pavilion area, located on the east side of the bridge and built by the late President Chiang Kai-shek, also honors his mother, Mrs. Wang.
- Xincheng - Xincheng is a village at the base of Taroko Gorge, renowned for its local Hualien snack stalls and restaurants. Its vintage-style photo studio makes it an ideal mid-trip rest spot. If you have any dietary preferences, feel free to ask your driver-guide for local recommendations on the day.
- Qixingtan Beach - Qixingtan Beach is a stunning pebble beach located on Hualien’s Pacific coast, just north of the city. Its crescent-shaped shoreline, deep blue waters, and mountain backdrop make it an ideal location for watching the sunrise and capturing photos. Visitors can enjoy cycling along the coastal trail, relaxing in pavilions, or strolling past vibrant houses and art installations. At night, the beach is peaceful—perfect for stargazing and listening to the waves. Note: Swimming is not permitted due to strong currents. Qixingtan is a must-visit for those seeking to enjoy nature and tranquility during a trip to Hualien. Before concluding your visit, listen to the waves crashing on the rocks and take in the breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean.
