A Journey Through East Java’s Hidden Gems

As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips, I have always been drawn to the open road and the stories that unfold along the way. My recent adventure in East Java, Indonesia, was no exception. The Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu, and Ijen Tour was a whirlwind of breathtaking landscapes and heartfelt connections, all made possible by our exceptional guide, Anam, and our skilled driver, Bams.

Our journey began in Surabaya, where we were whisked away to the mystical Mount Bromo. The drive itself was a nostalgic reminder of my youthful road trips across America, with rural landscapes and quaint villages unfolding before us. Anam’s knack for timing meant we arrived at Bromo with plenty of space to explore, free from the usual crowds. As the sun rose the next morning, we found ourselves at a secluded viewpoint, sipping hot coffee and savoring fresh fried bananas. The landscape before us was nothing short of surreal, a moment that will forever be etched in my memory.

Discovering the Magic of Tumpak Sewu

Our next destination was the awe-inspiring Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. The journey there was a zigzag of scenic routes, reminiscent of the winding roads through the American Midwest. Upon arrival, the waterfall exceeded all expectations, its beauty magnified by the perfect timing of our visit.

One of the highlights of this leg of the trip was an unexpected sunrise near Mount Puncak Mahameru. Walking through rice fields with one of Anam’s local friends, I was reminded of the simple, authentic experiences that make travel so rewarding. It was a moment of pure connection with the land and its people, a memory I will cherish for years to come.

The Enchanting Ijen Crater

Our final adventure took us to the Ijen Crater, a place of stunning natural beauty and one of the most memorable experiences of my travels. The hike was challenging yet invigorating, with laughter and camaraderie shared among our group. As we reached the Blue Flame point, the sight was nothing short of magical, a testament to the wonders of our world.

Throughout the journey, Bams navigated the roads with ease, his calm demeanor ensuring a safe and relaxed drive. Even as traffic built up on our way to the ferry, Anam’s quick thinking ensured we made it on time, a testament to his dedication and care.
