East Java’s Hidden Gems: A Road Trip to Remember
Inspired by my love for road trips, I embarked on a 4-day adventure through East Java, exploring Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, and Ijen Crater. Join me as I recount the unforgettable experiences and the nostalgic charm of the open road.
A Journey Through Time: The Road to Mount Bromo
As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips, the allure of the open road has always been irresistible to me. The idea of exploring the vast landscapes of East Java, with its majestic mountains and cascading waterfalls, was a call I couldn’t ignore. My husband and I embarked on the 4-Day East Java Adventure, eager to experience the wonders of Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, and Ijen Crater.
Our journey began in Surabaya, where we were greeted by Anam, our guide, and Bams, our driver. From the outset, it felt less like a tour and more like a road trip with old friends. Anam’s knowledge of East Java was impressive, and his ability to navigate the roads with perfect timing meant we often found ourselves at popular spots before the crowds descended.
The drive to Mount Bromo was a nostalgic reminder of my youthful road trips across America. The rural landscapes and small villages we passed were reminiscent of the quaint towns I once explored. Upon reaching Mount Bromo, the chill in the air was a stark contrast to the warm memories of those summer road trips, but it was a welcome change.
Sunrise Magic and Waterfall Wonders
The next morning, we awoke early for the Mount Bromo sunrise tour. Anam led us to a secluded spot, away from the bustling viewpoints, where we watched the sun rise over the volcano. It was a moment of pure magic, enhanced by the simple pleasure of sipping hot coffee and enjoying freshly fried bananas.
As we continued our journey to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, I was reminded of the many waterfalls I had visited in the American Midwest. Each one had its own charm, but Tumpak Sewu was something else entirely. The zig-zagging roads leading to the waterfall were reminiscent of the winding routes through the Appalachian Mountains, and the sight of the waterfall itself was breathtaking.
Anam’s passion for the region was infectious, and his stories about the local culture and history added depth to our experience. His photography skills were a delightful bonus, capturing moments that would become cherished memories.
The Final Ascent: Ijen Crater
Our final adventure was the hike up Mount Ijen. The trek was challenging, but Anam’s company made it feel like a leisurely stroll. We chatted and laughed, sharing stories of past travels, and before we knew it, we had reached the summit.
The sight of the Blue Flame and the sulfuric lake was a fitting climax to our journey. It was a reminder of the natural wonders that exist beyond the familiar landscapes of home. As we descended, I reflected on the many road trips that had shaped my life, each one a chapter in a story that continues to unfold.
As we made our way to the ferry for Bali, I felt a pang of nostalgia for the open road. Anam and Bams had made this journey unforgettable, and their dedication to ensuring we had the best experience possible was truly commendable. This trip was a testament to the power of travel to connect us with new places and people, and to remind us of the beauty that exists in the world.
