Highlights
  • Rocinha - Your tour starts in the morning with hotel pickup by Jeep for the drive to the Rocinha favela, the largest in Brazil, located in Rio’s South Zone.

Set on a steep hillside overlooking the city, Rocinha is home to about 250,000 people, and compared to simple shantytowns or slums, Rocinha has a better developed infrastructure with many businesses, giving it the classification of a favela bairro (favela neighborhood). With your guide, discover daily life in the favela as you meet its residents and visit organizations like the Samba School Acadêmicos da Rocinha. Wander along the small alleyways, and visit the favela’s center of trade, Largo do Boiadeiro, where you’ll find a street fair with food, drinks, and crafts from the region where most Rocinha residents are from. Your tour ends with hotel drop-off.

Please note: We are sensitive to the issues and concerns surrounding favelas, and we understand that this tour may not be suitable for everyone. We strongly believe that the purpose of this tour is for educational reasons alone and allows for a better understanding of Brazilian life inside a favela.

A must see - Amazing! The guide Andre and driver George, took extra, great care of us. We were the only two on the tour, so it felt private and cozy. Amazing journey from the privileged beaches of Rio, to a more unique area of the Rocinha favela. The Favela is in the hills above Rio and provides truly spectacular views. It’s also important to see another side of a wonderful city. The people are hard-working, kind and gracious. Never felt in the least bit of danger. The narrow walkways and stairs are easily navigated. And truly a unique perspective.

FAVELA JEEP TOUR - I was looking forward to this tour to learn more about the Favela and what is all about. Unfortunately our tour guide English was limited, and therefore could not explain to us the concept of the favela, the culture, how it is managed and a whole bunch of information which we did not get. The tour needs a bit more structure. A knowledgeable guide would make a whole lot of difference.

Don't fall for it being a "Jeep" tour - The tour itself is okish. Don't fall for the trap of it being a "jeep tour". You're literally paying more than twice the amount of a regular tour just for a jeep to pick you up and drop you off. The jeep literally just picks you up ajd leaves you at the entrance of the favela where you walk for hours and then picks you up at the exit and takes you straight home. You're 1000x better off just doing the regular walking tour which also provides transport to and from the favela (just maybe not in a jeep lol). Also, the tour is heavily pandered to you buying stuff from the local merchants. The guide is super nice though.
