20-2 Saiinnishiyakakechō - Factory Tour and Fan-Making Experience
Discover the exceptional art of Kyoto fan-making at our workshop, where every stage of the fan-making process is completed in-house. Unlike most factories that rely on a division of labor, our facility is a unique treasure where you can witness the entire fan creation process, from cutting and folding the special paper known as jigami to the final touches called tsuke.
Creating a Design Pattern
A draft design will be created to guide the fan’s final appearance.
Painting
Use your design to paint your fan. No need to worry if you’re not an artist; a beautiful finish can be achieved by applying gold leaf.
Leaf Application
Select from a range of foils, including gold, silver, copper, and tin. Apply your chosen foil and brush it for a stunning effect.
Add Your Name!
By incorporating your name during the draft design stage, you’ll have a personalized fan featuring your name.

Discover the distinctive “Sōsen Aogi,” a fan-making experience at the renowned Shimizu Shoten in Kyoto, celebrating its 78th anniversary. The “Sōsen Aogi” is an innovative origami fan that omits traditional fan ribs, making it highly sought after. This compact fan conveniently fits into a pocket.
The company is among the select few that produce this uniquely shaped fan, available exclusively through them and Rekiseisha in Hiroshima, making them one of only two companies in Japan offering it.
Participants can enjoy the creative freedom to add personal touches like foil stamping, completing the fan with their own hands and taking home their masterpiece.
Additionally, the experience begins with a workshop tour. This company is the only one where visitors can witness the entire fan-making process, including paper layering, cutting, folding, and finishing.
