From Caves to Cliffs: A Serendipitous Day on Hvar’s Waters
When the Blue and Green Caves were closed, our day trip took an unexpected turn, leading us to the underwater wonders of Zlatan Otok Winery and the majestic Red Rock cliffs. Join me as I recount a day of adventure and discovery on the waters of Hvar.
Setting Sail with Joško: A Day of Unexpected Adventures
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I found myself boarding a sleek speedboat with Joško, our skipper for the day. The plan was to explore the famed Blue and Green Caves on Vis Island, but as any seasoned traveler knows, the sea has a mind of its own. High tides and winds had closed the caves, but Joško, with his easy-going charm, had a backup plan that promised just as much adventure.
Our first stop was the Zlatan Otok Winery, nestled in the quaint village of Seta Nedjelja on Hvar’s southern coast. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the ocean’s bounty, and this winery, with its underwater cellar, was a testament to the sea’s influence on the land. The wine tastings were exquisite, and the charcuterie board was a delightful accompaniment. We left with a few bottles of Zlatan Pošip, a reminder of the unexpected pleasures that come with a change in plans.
Discovering the Red Rock Cliffs
With the wind in our hair and the sun warming our backs, we set off towards the Pakleni Islands. Joško guided us along the coastline, where the Red Rock limestone cliffs stood majestically against the azure sea. These cliffs, shaped by the relentless forces of nature, were a sight to behold. Boats dotted the waters below, with adventurers diving into the crystal-clear depths, snorkeling, and even rock jumping.
As someone who has spent countless hours riding waves and exploring hidden coves, the sight of these cliffs was a reminder of the ocean’s power and beauty. Joško’s stories of the cliffs’ formation added a layer of intrigue to the experience, making it more than just a visual feast.
A Perfect Lunch at Mamato Cafe Bar & Restaurant
Our journey continued to the island of Marinkovac, where we docked for lunch at the charming Mamato Cafe Bar & Restaurant. The atmosphere was lively, with the sound of laughter mingling with the gentle lapping of waves. The food was a delightful fusion of local flavors, and the drinks were refreshingly cold.
Sitting there, with the sun casting a golden glow over the beach, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of contentment. The view was nothing short of spectacular, a perfect backdrop to a day filled with unexpected adventures. As we savored our meal, Joško regaled us with tales of Croatian history and culture, his passion for his homeland evident in every word.
As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we spent our final hours exploring secluded beaches, each more beautiful than the last. Joško’s knowledge and enthusiasm made the day unforgettable, and as we returned to Hvar, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the serendipitous turn of events that had led us to this perfect day on the water.
