A Journey Through Time and Nature

Our family has always been drawn to the allure of natural wonders, and the Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia was no exception. As a museum curator, I often find myself captivated by the stories that landscapes and historical sites have to tell. The day began with an early morning departure from Split. Our guide, Sanja, greeted us with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm that set the tone for the day. Our children, ever curious, were particularly fascinated by the idea that the landscape was constantly evolving. The natural dams that separate the lakes are formed by the sedimentation of calcium carbonate, creating a living, breathing ecosystem that changes with time. It was a perfect blend of education and exploration, keeping both the adults and the kids engaged.

Midway through the park, we stopped for lunch. The park offers several options for food, but we had packed a picnic, which we enjoyed amidst the serene surroundings. The tranquility of the lakes, coupled with the gentle rustling of leaves, made for a perfect midday respite.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to the starting point, our hearts full of the day’s experiences. The return journey was a time for reflection, as Sanja engaged us in conversation about our favorite moments and what we had learned.

The drive back to Split was peaceful, with the setting sun casting a golden glow over the landscape. We arrived back just before 7:00 PM, tired but content. The day had been long, but every moment was worth it.
