Established by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has served as the residence for 40 monarchs.
Windsor Castle is a royal abode located in Windsor, within the English county of Berkshire, approximately 25 miles (40 km) west of central London. It is closely linked with the English and subsequent British royal family, representing nearly a thousand years of architectural history.
The initial castle was constructed in the 11th century, following the Norman conquest of England by William the Conqueror. Since the reign of Henry I (1100–1135), it has been utilized by the reigning monarch and stands as the longest-occupied palace in Europe.
- Salisbury Cathedral and Magna Carta - Salisbury Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is an Anglican cathedral situated in Salisbury, England. The cathedral is regarded as the epitome of Early English Gothic architecture. Constructed over a relatively brief span of 38 years between 1220 and 1258, it possesses a unity and coherence that is rare among medieval English cathedrals. The tower and spire were finalized by 1330, reaching 404 feet (123 m), making it the tallest church spire in England.
This Early English church houses the Magna Carta and features a notable clock dating back to 1386, with available tower tours.
- Stonehenge - Stonehenge is arguably the most renowned prehistoric monument worldwide. It was constructed in multiple phases: the initial monument was an early henge, built around 5,000 years ago, and the distinctive stone circle was established in the late Neolithic period, around 2500 BC. During the early Bronze Age, numerous burial mounds were constructed nearby.
Today, along with Avebury, Stonehenge forms the core of a World Heritage Site, featuring a unique concentration of prehistoric monuments.
- Jane Austen’s House - Jane Austen’s House, located in the Hampshire village of Chawton, is one of the world’s most significant literary sites. It was in this inspiring cottage that Jane Austen’s talent blossomed, where she wrote, revised, and published all six of her globally cherished novels. Step back to 1816 and walk in Jane’s footsteps; explore the rooms where she lived and wrote, and view her writing table, jewelry, letters, and first editions of her novels up close. Enjoy the charming cottage garden, try traditional garden games, and partake in Regency dress-up, bonnet designing, and more! Browse the unique selection of gifts and books in the delightful Gift Shop and unwind with an ice cream on the lawn.
Jane Austen is interred in the north nave aisle of Winchester Cathedral, attracting visitors from around the globe year-round to pay their respects.
- Highclere Castle - The earliest documented records of the estate date back to 749 AD when an Anglo-Saxon King granted the estate to the Bishops of Winchester. Bishop William of Wykeham constructed a splendid medieval palace and gardens in the park. Later, in 1679, the palace was reconstructed as Highclere Place House when acquired by Sir Robert Sawyer, the direct ancestor of the current Earl of Carnarvon. In 1842, Sir Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament, transformed Highclere House into the present-day Highclere Castle.
