Spectacular History and Anthropology - Caves were spectacular, though a little more scrambling than expected. We could have spent twice the time in the museum as well.

The cave was very... - The cave was very interesting and the museum is set up well. I can say for me the highlight was our guide Samuel. He told us a lot about the trip but also life and culture of South Africa.

Historical Tour - Pascal was an amazing guide for the day. The information he shared with us while in the car as informative as what we learned at the tour spots. Ask for him when you go.

Cradle of humankind - Sam was the best tour guide. He is very informative and made my group feel welcomed. The cave was a bit physically challenging for some but well worth the experience!

A good way to spend an afternoon as a family - We only had one afternoon in Johannesburg before flying out the next day. So we decided to take this half-day tour out to the Cradle of Humankind. The only challenge for us was that our flight was a bit delayed so we didn't have time for a bite to eat before our guide picked us up (he picked us up earlier than our reservation). There wasn't really a chance to eat along the way, so that was the only drawback. Pack snacks!
But, the drive out to the site was interesting - our guide pointed out lots of the history of the area along the way, which my husband and I found very educational. (Our kids, ages 12 and 10, were less interested.)
We did the caves tour first (and we were able to grab a quick bag of chips while we waited for our tour to begin), and it was fascinating to hear the history of humans and our ancestors in this area. Plus, the caves themselves were a lot of fun, especially the part where you have to crawl through and under a small space. This tour is not for anyone with mobility issues! Overall, the cave experience was interesting, especially if you're really into caving. Our kids are, so this worked out well.
Then, we drove to the museum (which is in the picture of the grassy covered hill). If you're traveling with younger children (12 or under), don't miss the boat trip inside the museum! It was a surprise for us that our tour guide wanted us to discover on our own and our kids absolutely loved it. It's not super long, but entertaining in its way. We almost missed it because the museum was closing when we arrived, but managed to squeak in just in time.
I'm glad we went as a family - the kids definitely enjoyed this more than they probably would have enjoyed a tour to Soweto - but if I were traveling with just adults and had the same limited time, I'd probably go into Soweto instead. With kids, the Cradle of Humankind is just the right half-day activity.

Exceeded Expectations - This tour went off without a hitch. Jamie our guide was very knowledgeable and extremely personable. Great sense of humour. Timing was great and transport to and from the site was comfortable. Really good value for money.

Mildly entertaining, but esucational - A word of advice right away: if you are traveling with little kids, it's very unlikely they will enjoy this site. By my estimate, the minimum age is around 9-10 years, unless your kid is really into anthropology.
All in all, it's a nice experience: both the site and the fairly long drive towards it (we were coming from Pretoria) are picturesque. The exhibition is a little bit worn out and a little bit "lo-tech" by modern standards, but still provides a great educational value. I, for one, was really awed by the mere fact of standing in the place where the oldest known "human" species' remains were uncovered (I'll spare technicalities on what classifies as hominides).
The underground "river run" is a mild fun, even though there are little special effects.
There's also a restaurant with h a great view on top of the "mound" containing the museum. We have not explored it, so can't say if it's good or not.

No partial refund - I accidentally booked the wrong day (my fault) and was not able to get a partial refund. I understand the cost of transportation was lost but it would feel more fair to have the cost of admission refunded.
